Job summary

San Bernardino County Fire Department is seeking a Fleet Technician II to perform skilled repair and maintenance on automobiles, trucks and equipment, and to operate gas and electric welding equipment for fabricating, modifying, and repairing a wide variety of county vehicles and gear.

Work includes outdoor tasks, lifting, and potentially exposure to chemicals and noise; candidates must have two years journey-level automotive/diesel experience and hold ASE certification; a California driver

• Two (2) years of paid full-time equivalent work experience as a journey-level automotive and/or diesel mechanic repairing and maintaining automobiles and trucks.

About the Department

Fleet Management Department provides services for the majority of county vehicles and equipment, including acquisition, maintenance, repair, modification, and disposal of vehicles and related equipment. The department operates its main garage in San Bernardino and additional shops for light duty, heavy duty, welding/metal fabrication, parts room, fueling stations, and service centers. It also manages a motor pool responsible for the maintenance and replacement of approximately 1,900 vehicles assigned to county departments.

Conditions of Employment

• Physical: Must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform various tasks such as bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and stooping. Work is outdoor and may involve exposure to electricity, chemicals, heat, oil, odors, dust, gas, and noise.
• Tools: Must have personal hand tools; an annual tool allowance of $550 is provided on July 1st.
• Shift: May be required to work day, evening, or night shifts as needed.
• License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required. A California Class B license may be required depending on assignment.

Minimum Requirements

• Two (2) years of paid full-time equivalent work experience as a journey-level automotive and/or diesel mechanic repairing and maintaining automobiles and trucks.

Desired Qualifications

• Current certification in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
• Experience in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) propulsion systems is desirable.
