Job summary

Smyrna Police Department seeks a Fleet Tech I to maintain, diagnose, and repair cars, trucks, and off‑road equipment. You will keep small equipment and engines in line with manufacturer guidelines to ensure safety and reliability of the unit.

Candidates should have a high school diploma and at least 4 years of related vehicle/truck experience, valid driver's license, and ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 years’ related experience as a vehicle or HD truck technician.
  • Possession and retention of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • DOT requirements and DOT standards knowledge is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Repair vehicles during breakdowns and emergencies in a safe, efficient, high‑quality manner.
  • Run operation tests before repairs to verify complaints.
  • Diagnose malfunctions and perform repairs per manufacturer specifications (engines, transmissions, brakes, HVAC).
  • Document mileage/hours and follow parts ordering and billing procedures.
  • Perform final operational tests after repairs.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections to maximize safety and reliability.
  • Perform DOT inspections.
  • Weld and fabricate parts as needed, including design work.
  • Inspect for cracks and potential issues and plan needed repairs.
  • Maintain harmonious relations with customers, coworkers and supervisors.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Job Title: Fleet Tech I
Pay Grade: 2026 base $22.88
Employment Status: Full-Time

Reports To: Fleet Manager and/or supervisor or another designee
Supervisory Responsibility: None
Primary Work Location: Shop located at Public Works and/or other locations in Town as needed

Position Summary

Perform maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on cars, trucks, and off-road equipment in a safe, efficient, quality minded and customer focused manner. Perform maintenance and repairs on small equipment and engines to manufacturer’s guidelines to maintain the safety and reliability of the unit.

Essential Responsibilities

These are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties.

  • Perform repair work on vehicles such as breakdowns, malfunctions and emergency roadside repair in a safe, efficient, and quality manner.
  • Perform operation test prior to repairs to verify complaint
  • Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repairs to manufacturers specifications including engines, transmissions and clutches, suspension and steering, fuel and ignition (gas and diesel), electrical systems, brakes, and HVAC systems
  • Follow paper-flow procedures including documenting correct mileage/hours, save and tag all warranty and core parts, document all repairs on work order using complaint, cause, and correction format, follow parts ordering/billing procedures.
  • Perform final operational test on all vehicles to quality-check all repairs
  • Perform required inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to maximize the safety, productivity, and life of the unit.
  • Perform DOT inspections
  • Perform preventive maintenance on trucks such as fluid changes, lubrications, safety inspections, and brake repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on off-road equipment such as lubrications, adjustments, cutting tip replacements, and safety inspections.
  • Examine vehicle to determine if any additional safety or repair work is needed.
  • Perform maintenance and repair welding on equipment. Fabricate parts as required including any design work needed
  • Inspect for cracks or damage to assess needed repair
  • Fabricate parts as needed to complete repair including any design work
  • Perform Mig welding and stick welding job. Use a plasma cutter when needed.
  • Must maintain a positive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes harmonious relations with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
  • 4 years’ related experience as a vehicle or HD truck technician

ADA Requirements
  • This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; mental acuity is required to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes
  • Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
  • The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, hazards, and atmospheric conditions
  • The employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment
Additional Requirements
  • Possession and retention of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
  • o All motor vehicle violations must be reported to supervisor immediately and a good driving record is required to retain position
  • Must pass testing for substance abuse and criminal background investigation as required by DOT
  • Required to pass testing of physical strength and agility to qualify for and retain position, per DOT standards
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must be obtained within the first six months of employment
