Job summary

City of Killeen seeks a skilled mechanic to maintain vehicles and mechanical equipment. Responsibilities include safely operating forklifts, diagnosing and repairing a wide range of systems, and ensuring a clean, safe shop environment.

You will handle new vehicle check-ins, perform scheduled and unscheduled repairs, and provide on-call after-hours support approximately one week per quarter. A valid driver's license and certifications within a year are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year of specialized training from an accredited institute; or
• 3 years related experience.
• Must have a valid driver’s license by date of hire.
• Must obtain an air conditioning certification, state Motor Vehicle Inspector’s (MVI) certification and Texas State CDL license within one year, funded by the City.
• After completion of the six (6) month probationary period, employee will be on-call for after-hours emergencies approximately one week per quarter.
• Certification in vehicle maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a Forklift and/or other lifting devices.
• Perform diagnostic, preventive maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, engine overhauls, transmissions, brakes, and emissions systems.
• Schedule and unscheduled repairs and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Handle new vehicle check-ins, maintain shop equipment, and keep a safe, clean work environment.
• Operate automotive and shop equipment and enforce shop safety rules.
• Provide road call assistance and log maintenance in a computer-based maintenance program, including parts used and hours worked.
• Maintain security of issued city-owned equipment.

CITY OF KILLEEN POSITION DESCRIPTION

Performs semi-skilled, skilled, technical, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the City of Killeen.

The employee will have the responsibility of:

• Safely operating a Forklift and/or other lifting devices
• Performing diagnostic, preventive maintaining and repairing on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. to include tune-ups, overhauling engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, brakes, drive trains, generators, computer-controlled fuel injection and emission related equipment, carburetors, air conditioning, electrical, cooling, suspension, pumps, hydraulic systems, and steering
• Scheduled and unscheduled repairs and ensuring compliance with all industry standards
• Handling new vehicle check-ins, maintaining shop equipment, and ensuring a safe and clean work environment
• Operating automotive and general shop equipment to include brake lathes, gas and arc welding equipment, engine analyzers, tire equipment, scanners, and computers; complies with and helps enforce shop safety rules
• Providing road call assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate. Entersworkorderupdatesandprogressinacomputer-basedmaintenanceprogram; recordings of maintenance and repair work, including parts used and hours worked
• Maintainingthesecurityofissuedcityownedequipment.(e.g.,tools,toolbox,safety equipment)

The work environment will require the employee to:

• Occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Highschooldiplomaorequivalent; and
• One(1)yearofspecializedtrainingfromanaccreditedinstitute; or
• Three(3)yearsrelated experience
