Job summary

San Antonio Zoo is seeking a Fleet Rides Mechanic to support our trains, vehicles and rides. This full‑time role collaborates with the Lead Mechanic – Rides and the maintenance team to diagnose issues, perform preventive maintenance, and keep equipment safe and reliable for guests.

Qualified candidates have an associate degree or equivalent, at least 1 year of trade experience with tools, and a valid Texas driver’s license. A pre‑employment background check is required.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• One year trade experience, including the use of tools and equipment.
• Must be 18+ with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
• Must have a valid Class C Texas Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 45 days of employment.
• Pre-employment drug screen and background check required.
• Ability to work in varying climate and weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose issues and develop corrective action plans for vehicles, small engines, and rides.
• Maintain documentation on preventive maintenance and work performed on fleet vehicles, equipment, small engines, and rides.
• Knowledge of hand tools and equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
• Safely operate zoo vehicles (dump, pickup, flatbed trucks), forklifts, and personal lift equipment.
• Maintain zoo vehicles, small engines, and rides.
• Assist Craftspersons with assigned projects.

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As the Fleet Rides Mechanic (Craftsperson), you are responsible for skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks in various job assignments regarding the train, Zoo vehicles, and rides. In addition, you will collaborate with the Lead Mechanic - Rides daily to assess and complete all assigned tasks and projects. Typically, you will be under the direct supervision of a Manager. Still, many routine and repetitive tasks may be completed without difficulty and under general supervision.

As a Fleet Rides Mechanic, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:

• Able to perform diagnostic tests to identify and develop corrective action plans in automotive mechanical systems for vehicles, small engines, and rides.
• Able to keep proper documentation on preventive maintenance and work performed on the fleet vehicles, equipment, small engines, and rides.
• Knowledge of hand tools and simple equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
• Safely operate Zoo vehicles, including dump, pickup, and flatbed trucks, forklifts, and personal lift equipment.
• Maintain Zoo vehicles, small engines, and rides.
• Assist various Craftspersons with assigned projects.
• Upholds all company policies as outlined in the Zoo Standard Operating Procedures, SA Zoo Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.
• Have the ability to understand, foresee, and apply necessary safety precautions applicable to the Zoo environment.
• Consistently exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.

• Associate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.

• This position requires a valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License or a valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 45 days of becoming employed.
