Job summary

A prominent school district is seeking a Fleet/Mechanic Supervisor to manage the maintenance of all district-owned vehicles. The ideal candidate will oversee vehicle maintenance operations, develop training for maintenance staff, and ensure compliance with district policies, while holding relevant qualifications and certifications.

Qualifications

  • Five years of mechanical experience required.
  • Three years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Previous experience as maintenance shop foreman preferred.

JOB TITLE: Fleet/Mechanic Supervisor

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Associate Director for Transportation

DEPT./SCHOOL: Maintenance/Transportation

DATE REVISED: April 2020

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Manage and supervise the vehicle maintenance program of all district-owned vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Associate’s Degree preferred
  • ASE Master Certification desired
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of maintenance software
  • Knowledge of inventory and part ordering procedures
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines
  • Knowledge of air and hydraulic brake systems
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems
  • Personal Computer skills
  • General mechanical skills

Experience:

  • Five years of mechanical experience
  • Three years of supervisory experience preferred
  • Previous experience as maintenance shop foreman preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Support the educational goals of the district.
  2. Contribute to the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvement.
  3. Work with the Associate Director of Transportation in designing and implementing improvements in vehicle maintenance operations.
  4. Supervise the district’s vehicle maintenance program.
  5. Develop training programs for maintenance personnel.
  6. Evaluate employee performance to ensure effectiveness.
  7. Make personnel recommendations regarding placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.
  8. Assist in formulating budgets for the vehicle maintenance program.
  9. Maintain all reports related to vehicle maintenance.
  10. Implement preventative maintenance schedules for all district vehicles.
  11. Demonstrate professional, ethical, behavior and serve as a role model.
  12. Maintain regular attendance and report to work as scheduled.
  13. Work with the Purchasing Manager on parts management and inventory system.
  14. Maintain a computerized inventory of parts and supplies.
  15. Dedicate approximately 30% of work time to actual mechanical work.
  16. Follow district uniform policies.
  17. Comply with all policies and procedures.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and evaluate mechanics, helpers, and other personnel in the maintenance program.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer, office supplies, hand tools, hydraulic jacks, electric drills, grinders, air tools, hand trucks, forklifts, hydraulic lift gates, high-pressure washers, ladders, motor vehicles including school buses, two-way radios.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:

Effective communication (written and verbal), concentration, reasoning, reading, instructing, emotional control in stressful situations.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Ability to conduct on-site inspections, drive, walk, lift under 50 lbs., work indoors and outdoors, tolerate temperature and humidity extremes, noise, slippery surfaces, sunlight, work with water and cleaning products, work around vehicles, wear safety gear, and work around moving objects.
