Job summary

Elon University in Elon, North Carolina seeks a Fleet Mechanic II to maintain and repair university vehicles and equipment in the Facilities Management shop. The role is on-site, full-time and supervised as needed, focusing on gasoline, diesel and propane systems across a transit fleet and campus vehicles.

You will perform routine maintenance, assist with major mechanical repairs, and support shop safety and housekeeping.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Associate degree, or vocational or technical school degree in Automotive Technology.
  • Experience with automotive diagnostic monitors and maintenance software desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Repair cars and small vehicles, including major mechanical repairs under supervision.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance, tire mounting/balancing, and vehicle washing.
  • Assist with installation/removal of equipment in university police vehicles and perform welding as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, organized shop environment and support inclusivity on campus.

Position Summary

Responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and/or repair tasks in a repair shop or in the field as assigned by a Fleet Mechanic I or Automotive Supervisor. Work is of average difficulty and is performed on automotive, transit fleet vehicles, and/or special vehicles and equipment that are gasoline, diesel and/or propane powered, with varying degrees of supervision based upon aptitude and skills required.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Job Duties
  • Car/small vehicle repair
    • Under general supervision perform and/or assist with major mechanical repairs such as transmission and engine rebuild on university vehicles and equipment
    • Perform complete brake jobs on cars and medium duty trucks.
    • Perform minor mechanical repairs on small engines and equipment such as water pumps, fuel pumps and alternators.
  • Scheduled Maintenance
    • Repair, mount, balance and install tires
    • Complete Preventative Maintenance checks and repairs.
    • Wash vehicles.
    • Pick up and deliver vehicles and parts.
  • Miscellaneous projects
    • Perform shop housekeeping duties maintaining a safe work environment
    • Conduct installation and removal of auxiliary equipment such as police radios and other equipment in university police vehicles.
    • Make welding repairs and fabricate small metal projects.
