Job summary

The Village of Montgomery seeks a dependable Fleet Mechanic to join the Public Works Department. This full-time role performs maintenance and repair of light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, ensuring safety and reliability of autos, squad cars, trucks, mowers, trailers and more.

Ideal candidates hold a high school diploma or equivalent with vocational automotive training, 1–3 years’ experience, and knowledge of repair methods, tools, materials, and safety practices.

Qualifications

• This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and vocational training in automotive mechanics.
• Candidates should have 1–3 years of prior automotive mechanic experience.
• Knowledge of automotive repair methods, tools, materials and safety practices is expected.
• Welding and fabrication experience is preferred.
• Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license with ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair light- and heavy-duty municipal vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical defects and adapt tools/parts to repair needs.
• Ensure safe, reliable operation of vehicles including snowplows and salt spreaders.
• Welding and fabrication tasks as needed.

Job Opportunities

The Village of Montgomery is seeking a dependable, skilled Fleet Mechanicto join our Public Works Department. This position performs semi-skilled mechanical work involving maintenance and repair of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, squad cars, trucks, mowers, trailers, snowplows, salt spreaders, and other municipal equipment.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on mechanical work, takes pride in maintaining safe and reliable equipment, and thrives in a team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will:

• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent and vocational training in automotive mechanics.
• Have one to three years of prior experience as an automotive mechanic.
• Demonstrate knowledge of automotive repair methods, tools, materials, and safety practices.
• Be able to diagnose mechanical defects and adapt tools/parts to specific repair needs.
• Skill in welding and fabrication is preferred.
• Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license, with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.

This is a full-time position. Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The starting pay for this position is $30.25 per hour.
