Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, diagnose, maintains and repairs diesel, gasoline, and various other types of vehicles. This is skilled mechanical work for the City of St. George with an emphasis on Medium/Heavy Duty vehicles and equipment.
Position: Fleet Master Technician Salary: $61,854 - $77,317/year
Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $92,780/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2025.

City of St. George Fleet department has an amazing opportunity for a Master Technician to join our team! The Fleet Department currently employs 17 accomplished technicians and support staff to keep St. George running! Employees of the Fleet department receive paid training and education courses through Pierce Equipment, Cummins, Ford, GMC and many more industry leaders! The department provides paid testing through ASE to become ASE certified. As a shop, we have earned the ASE Blue Seal certification for over 17 years! Our facility has state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, equipment and software. We have a great work environment and excel at keeping a clean shop to work in! Fleet specific benefits include: paid uniforms and boot allowance, $1,200 year tool allowance, new-hire Master Tech incentive bonus of $5,000 ($2500 after 6 month probation requirements are met and $2,500 after the first year).
The technician work schedule is 4-days a week with 10-hour days from 6am-5pm. Work performed in an automotive repair shop environment. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights exerting up to 40-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Bends, stretches, twists, or reaches with body, arms, and/or legs. Detects or tells the difference between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Moves hand, hand together with arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Quickly and repeatedly adjusts the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Makes precisely coordinated movements of fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects. Matches or detects differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Stands, walks, or sits uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather. Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. Exposure to conditions, such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation, which affect the respiratory system, eyes, and the skin. Exposure to stress because of human behavior.
Note: Employees in this classification:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Training in CAN/multiplexing data systems required. Recent experience in Automotive/Diesel CAN/Multiplexing systems and current Automotive/Diesel technology.
Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years full time currently employed in Automotive/Diesel truck or Heavy equipment repair, electrical repair, and diagnosis of complex computer systems with current technology of passenger vehicles and light duty pickups. Thorough knowledge of Controller Area Network (CAN) system network communication. Experience and ability to wire and/or repair any components in a complete electrical system.
Knowledge and expertise in performing highly specialized maintenance along with the ability to safely operate all City equipment, i.e., emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, etc.
The City of St. George covers 100% of the premiums for the High Deductible health plan for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. The City also offers two Traditional medical plans. Employees have the option to upgrade to one of the City’s Traditional medical plans with a lower deductible by paying a premium for the selected plan. The City also offers voluntary benefits including dental insurance, vision insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, and retirement savings plans at the employee’s cost and discretion. Health care coverage begins the first day of employment.
The City fully funds an employee pension plan through Utah Retirement Systems for each active full-time employee.
Paid time off (PTO) hours are accrued according to the number of hours paid. Based on a full 40-hour work week, paid time off is accrued as follows: 2 weeks for years 0 through 3.99, 3 weeks for years 4 through 11.99, and 4 weeks for 12+ years.
The City has 13 paid holidays each year. If unused, holiday time can be used as Paid Time Off.
The City provides 12 days of sick leave each year. You can accrue sick leave without limit.
All active full-time employees enrolled in the employer sponsored medical plan are provided with $50,000 worth of life insurance. Spouses and dependents are provided with $5,000 and $2,500 respectively. Full-time employees are also provided with an AD&D policy for $50,000.
All active full-time employees enrolled in the employer sponsored medical plan are provided with LTD insurance benefits.
The City offers a reimbursement of 75% of the tuition and required student fees, up to $2,000 per fiscal year, for pre-approved courses for full-time employees when the employee meets the eligibility requirements. This reimbursement is not a guarantee, it is subject to the approval of the Department Head. Reimbursement will be reduced by any other financial aid that does not have to be repaid, such as the GI Bill, scholarships and grants.
