Position Summary

Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, diagnose, maintains and repairs diesel, gasoline, and various other types of vehicles. This is skilled mechanical work for the City of St. George with an emphasis on Medium/Heavy Duty vehicles and equipment.

Salary And Benefits

Position: Fleet Master Technician Salary: $61,854 - $77,317/year

Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $92,780/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2025.

Fleet Department Summary

City of St. George Fleet department has an amazing opportunity for a Master Technician to join our team! If you are looking to be a pillar of support to our Local Government, helping to maintain and service over 1,100 assets including Emergency Vehicles, Transit Buses, Trucks, Automobiles… everything big and small - we’ve got a place for you!

The Fleet Department currently employs 17 accomplished technicians and support staff to keep St. George running! Employees of the Fleet department receive paid training and education courses through Pierce Equipment, Cummins, Ford, GMC and many more industry leaders! The department provides paid testing through ASE to become ASE certified. As a shop, we have earned the ASE Blue Seal certification for over 17 years! Our facility has state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, equipment and software. We have a great work environment and excel at keeping a clean shop to work in! Fleet specific benefits include: paid uniforms and boot allowance, $1,200 year tool allowance, new-hire Master Tech incentive bonus of $5,000 ($2500 after 6 month probation requirements are met and $2,500 after the first year).

The technician work schedule is 4-days a week with 10-hour days from 6am-5pm. Essential Functions
  • Performs skilled mechanical work in diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of a wide variety of both light and heavy construction equipment, including fire apparatus and police, water, power, sewer, and street maintenance equipment.
  • Repairs and services automobiles and light trucks, including major engine overhauls, adjustment of computer command controls, electronic ignitions, brakes, clutches, diesel engines, and transmissions.
  • Diagnoses drivetrain and exhaust after treatment components using sophisticated computer testing equipment. Performs adjustments or replaces defective parts as required.
  • Performs oxyacetylene and electronic welding as required. Fabricates specialized equipment. Lays out, cuts, and fits material for welding.
  • Performs state safety inspections.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of hydraulic systems, able to trace down problems with a hydraulic schematic.
  • Performs detailed repair notes on completed repairs for future repair order history, of parts and materials used for work orders.
  • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions to determine the most effective and economical means of repair. Makes decisions of what repairs will be made and completes all required work to achieve proper vehicle performance.
  • Performs preventive maintenance for all City equipment and vehicles such as lubrication, oil change, and minor repairs as needed.
  • Up-fits various vehicles (police, fire, utility) that require extensive electrical and computer software knowledge and procedures.
  • Reads, diagnoses, and comprehends diagnostic tools using OBDII technology, including programmable logic systems, and installs and repairs such systems.
  • Understands, diagnoses, and repairs multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.
  • Instructs, mentors, and assists with supervision of the on the job training of Journey Technician and Apprentice Technician.
  • May assist the shop supervisor in scheduling and supervision of Fleet Technicians when occasion arises.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Work performed in an automotive repair shop environment. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights exerting up to 40-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Bends, stretches, twists, or reaches with body, arms, and/or legs. Detects or tells the difference between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Moves hand, hand together with arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Quickly and repeatedly adjusts the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Makes precisely coordinated movements of fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects. Matches or detects differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Stands, walks, or sits uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather. Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. Exposure to conditions, such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation, which affect the respiratory system, eyes, and the skin. Exposure to stress because of human behavior.

Note: Employees in this classification:

  • May be required to work unconventional shifts and to respond to emergencies.
  • Must supply own hand tools and rollaway to perform duties as required.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Training in CAN/multiplexing data systems required. Recent experience in Automotive/Diesel CAN/Multiplexing systems and current Automotive/Diesel technology.

Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years full time currently employed in Automotive/Diesel truck or Heavy equipment repair, electrical repair, and diagnosis of complex computer systems with current technology of passenger vehicles and light duty pickups. Thorough knowledge of Controller Area Network (CAN) system network communication. Experience and ability to wire and/or repair any components in a complete electrical system.

Licenses And/or Certifications
  • Must possess ASE Master Certification and maintain certifications. Fifteen years of experience may be substituted for certifications with demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. A valid Utah Commercial Driver License Class B must be obtained within 6 months of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • State safety inspection certification for buses and heavy trucks must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • Refrigerant recovery and recycling certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge and expertise in performing highly specialized maintenance along with the ability to safely operate all City equipment, i.e., emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, etc.

Knowledge Of
  • Machs and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Oxyacetylene and electronic welding.
  • Electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems; pumps; gas, natural gas, and diesel engines; cooling systems; up-fit wiring; and transmissions.
  • OBDII system and CAN system.
  • Multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.
  • Diagnosis of complex computers and their communication process.

  • Repairing City equipment using the needed tools.
  • Determining causes of operating errors and deciding proper action to correct errors.

  • Extensive use of computers including proficiency in typing detailed notes.
  • Electrical up-fitting of public safety vehicles.
  • Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
Ability to:
  • Operate a laptop/diagnostic computer.
  • Efficiently operate fleet software programs
  • Read and analyze data and apply strategies based on the diagnostics to repair air bag deployment system, vehicle anti-lock brake system, electronic fuel injection, air conditioning, hydraulic systems, and diesel systems, etc. on light and heavy vehicles.
  • Evaluate vehicle safety needs, and exercise independent judgment to ensure reliable vehicle performance.
  • Perform state safety inspections.
  • Understand and comply with all OSHA regulations.
  • Read and write in English at a business level.
  • Understand and explain complex wiring schematics.

Health Care

The City of St. George covers 100% of the premiums for the High Deductible health plan for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. The City also offers two Traditional medical plans. Employees have the option to upgrade to one of the City’s Traditional medical plans with a lower deductible by paying a premium for the selected plan. The City also offers voluntary benefits including dental insurance, vision insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, and retirement savings plans at the employee’s cost and discretion. Health care coverage begins the first day of employment.

Retirement

The City fully funds an employee pension plan through Utah Retirement Systems for each active full-time employee.

Paid Time Off

Paid time off (PTO) hours are accrued according to the number of hours paid. Based on a full 40-hour work week, paid time off is accrued as follows: 2 weeks for years 0 through 3.99, 3 weeks for years 4 through 11.99, and 4 weeks for 12+ years.

Holidays

The City has 13 paid holidays each year. If unused, holiday time can be used as Paid Time Off.

Sick Leave

The City provides 12 days of sick leave each year. You can accrue sick leave without limit.

Life Insurance

All active full-time employees enrolled in the employer sponsored medical plan are provided with $50,000 worth of life insurance. Spouses and dependents are provided with $5,000 and $2,500 respectively. Full-time employees are also provided with an AD&D policy for $50,000.

Long Term Disability

All active full-time employees enrolled in the employer sponsored medical plan are provided with LTD insurance benefits.

Educational Assistance Program

The City offers a reimbursement of 75% of the tuition and required student fees, up to $2,000 per fiscal year, for pre-approved courses for full-time employees when the employee meets the eligibility requirements. This reimbursement is not a guarantee, it is subject to the approval of the Department Head. Reimbursement will be reduced by any other financial aid that does not have to be repaid, such as the GI Bill, scholarships and grants.
