Position Summary
The Fleet Department Manager provides strategic and operational leadership over Hinterland Group's Fleet, Fabrication, and Warehouse divisions, overseeing the Fleet, Fab & Warehouse Supervisor and department staff. This role is responsible for fleet readiness, department budgets and purchasing, staffing, and compliance, and ensures vehicles, equipment, and supplies are available and in working order to support ongoing projects.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Department Leadership & Oversight
- Oversee daily operations of the Fleet, Fabrication, and Warehouse divisions.
- Directly oversee the Fleet, Fab & Warehouse Supervisor and provide guidance on staffing, priorities, and escalations.
- Set department goals, priorities, and procedures, and ensure they are followed across all shifts.
- Hold regular meetings with the Supervisor and department staff to review performance, equipment status, and open issues.
2. Fleet & Equipment Management
- Oversee maintenance, repair, and readiness of the company's fleet of trucks, heavy equipment, and trenchless machinery.
- Review and approve major equipment repairs, replacements, and vendor selections.
- Ensure fleet, fabrication, and warehouse equipment complies with DOT and safety regulations.
- Approve equipment assignments to jobs and resolve escalated equipment issues.
- Follow up with the different divisions on the status of vehicle and equipment repairs.
3. Budget & Purchasing
- Oversee the department's budget, including fleet maintenance, fabrication supplies, and warehouse purchasing.
- Review and approve purchases and quotes submitted by the Supervisor and department staff.
- All purchases must be approved in advance, by email, from Tessy or Loa.
- Review monthly expenses and inventory totals submitted by department staff and report variances to the Operations Manager.
4. Staffing & Performance
- Participate in hiring, training, and performance management for Fleet, Fabrication, and Warehouse staff.
- Approve staff schedules, including Saturday coverage, and ensure adequate staffing across all shifts.
- Coordinate with Human Resources on employee issues as needed.
5. Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure the department follows all DOT, safety, and company policy requirements.
- Maintain ongoing communication with Safety and the DOT department on compliance requirements.
- Coordinate with the company's DOT department at the office to ensure drivers are approved before working out of the shop.
- Report on department performance, equipment status, and priorities to the Operations Manager.
- Coordinate with Safety, Fleet, and DOT on incidents, accidents, and citations as needed.
6. Emergency Response
- Serve as an escalation point for emergencies, urgent repairs, or field issues outside normal business hours.
- Coordinate mechanics, towing, parts, or other resources needed to resolve emergencies quickly.
