Job summary

Johnsburg School District 12 in Illinois seeks a Fleet Manager to lead maintenance and repairs for district vehicles including school buses. You will coordinate transportation and maintenance staff, supervise snow removal, and manage shop safety and preventive maintenance programs.

The role requires a CDL B with school bus endorsement, state vehicle licenses, and strong knowledge of fleet operation, budgets, and parts procurement. Flexible hours and emergency readiness are expected.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CDL Class B with S and P endorsements and school bus permit.
  • Valid Class C UST Operator License required.
  • Active IDOT/agriscience related licenses preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of fleet maintenance and repair of school buses and equipment.
  • Willingness to respond to emergencies and work flexible hours.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee high quality and timely maintenance and repair of district vehicles including school buses.
  • Assist Director with coordinating and supervising transportation and maintenance staff.
  • Coordinate snow removal and de-icing operations and lawn maintenance program.
  • Develop, manage and implement shop safety and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Coordinate with vendors and ensure timely, accurate repairs.
  • Inspections of outside vendor work and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Ensure training of shop personnel and maintain employee certifications.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge in maintenance and repair of automobiles, automotive equipment, and commercial vehicles including school buses
  • Strong knowledge in maintenance and repair of outdoor equipment (ie: Tractors, mowers, snow blowers, etc.)
  • Skill in operating motorized equipment and various hand, pneumatic and power tools
  • Availability for emergency calls
  • Respect confidentiality
  • Must be able to use tact and diplomacy in human relations
  • References must be provided
  • Ability to lift 50 Lbs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory concepts.
  • Knowledge and principles and practices of fleet management.
  • High degree of technical skills with school bus, gas, heavy diesel, electric, automotive and motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle warranty programs.
  • Knowledge of budget practices.
  • Knowledge of vehicle/equipment specifications and applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex materials such as technical manuals, schematics and writing diagrams.
  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communications of complex materials.
  • Understanding of procurement processes related to parts, fuel, lubricants, and oil.
  • Skilled in various diagnostic software and other technology applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities and workloads.
Essential Functions
  • Responsible for high quality and timely maintenance and repair of District vehicles including school buses
  • Assists the Director with coordinating, assigning duties, and supervision of transportation and maintenance staff as needed
  • Coordinates and supervises district snow removal and de-icing work
  • Maintains district lawn maintenance program
  • Responsible for developing, managing, and carrying out a shop safety program
  • Responsible for developing, managing, and carrying out a District fleet preventive maintenance program
  • Coordinates effectively with vendors and communicates with shop personnel to facilitate timely and accurate repairs
  • Inspects work performed by outside vendors to ensure work performed meets expectations
  • Ensures that training of all shop personnel occurs in an orderly and consistent manner and sees that appropriate standards of performances are designed, achieved and maintained. Ensures employee certifications are maintained.
  • Follows up on problems reported by drivers and communicates effectively the status of repairs.
  • Ensures buses operate in a safe manner and meet IDOT standards prior to being placed into service. Makes determinations to place buses out of service.
  • Ensures buses are rotated for service effectively to evenly distribute mileage and balances preventive maintenance.
  • Follows District policy, sets work standards and formulates work rules and procedures
  • Solves problems and makes decisions concerning repairs to be made, parts to be replaced and preventive maintenance work to be done. Makes recommendations to the Director on major items to repair or replacement.
  • Oversees warranties and recalls for all District vehicles. Makes recommendations for vehicle purchases.
  • Recommends the specification of parts or services, materials, supplies and equipment for procurement.
  • Maintains an efficient and effective inventory of repair parts to ensure timely repairs and minimize down time.
  • Flexibility to respond to emergencies and urgent operational needs that may arise outside of the regular workday, including evenings and weekends.
  • Performs thorough preventive maintenance inspections and completes all required PM maintenance operations.
  • Prioritizes and performs reactive maintenance and repairs to ensure availability of fleet vehicles.
  • Performs complex repairs including engine, transmission, electrical, fuel, brake, and exhaust system repairs.
  • Maintains accurate service and repair history records for all district vehicles and equipment; monitors and updates vehicle registrations.
  • Performs diagnostic tests using technical equipment (OBDI, OBDII, and ABS systems, etc.).
  • Keeps informed regarding changes in equipment and maintenance techniques through reading and participating in meetings, seminars, conferences, and available training.
  • Maintains tools and work place so that shop conditions are neat and orderly.
  • Completes all additional tasks or responsibilities as directed by the Director of Operations.
  • Promotes a positive relationship with students, staff and community.
  • Adheres to the district's expectations with regards to attendance and punctuality.
