Position is responsible for providing computerized inventory management, record maintenance, and distribution of supplies for the Department or Division to which assigned. Tracking and monitoring of deliveries throughout the City of Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Fire Department provides emergency and fire protection services for the City of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Firefighters are also trained as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, extrication specialists, top water and rescue divers, confined space, trench rescue and as hazardous materials technicians to help save lives, protect property, and the environment.

Position Responsibilities
  • Operates all types of vehicles, including fire engines, fire trucks and the fuel truck.
  • Direct work activities of community service workers.
  • Observes all job-site safety regulations.
  • Maintains control of costly IFD inventory including firefighting tools and station supplies.
  • Operates snow plow to remove snow on approaches to fire stations.
  • Operates fuel truck to refuel fire apparatus that are on long incidents.
  • Operates fork lift to move supplies in warehouse.
  • Purchase, distribute, track and dispose of all fire department equipment, house supplies and building material by compiling and analyzing usage statistics to calculate department needs.
  • Maintain records of shipments and invoices.
  • Organize and schedule annual hose, ladder and pump testing.
  • Coordinates material and equipment deliveries using community service workers and light duty firefighters.

Qualifications

Skills and knowledge are typically acquired through a High School Diploma or the equivalent and four years of directly related work experience. Education may be substituted for work experience. Effective communications, computer and customer service skills are required. A valid Indiana Operator’s license may also be required. A valid HAZMAT Class A CDL is required. Required to be on-call 24/7 to respond and swap out apparatus having mechanical failures, or to transport the fuel truck to an emergency incident. Required to maintain a forklift operator certification.

Independent Judgment

Established policies and procedures control actions. Independent judgement is utilized when there are no available policies and procedures and errors in judgement may cause inconsistencies and inconveniences.
