Performs journey-level fleet technician work in the maintenance, repair, major overhaul, fabrication, and/or collision repair of a wide variety of landfill and fleet equipment.
Automotive Assignment
- Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on light-duty and medium-duty fleet equipment such as gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment and small gasoline-powered engines.
- Fleet equipment includes various types of vehicles, including police patrol, passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, and landscaping equipment.
- Repairs and maintains all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, and HVAC.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of light-duty passenger vehicles, police patrol, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, or landscaping equipment.
- May mentor Fleet Technicians with general repairs and diagnostics of light-duty and medium-duty fleet equipment, including passenger vehicles, police patrol, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, or landscaping equipment.
Heavy Equipment Assignment- Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on various gasoline and diesel-powered heavy-duty equipment such as solid waste trucks, tractors, heavy-duty trucks, small transit, bucket trucks, and fire apparatus.
- Repairs and maintains all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic systems.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, solid waste trucks, construction equipment, bucket trucks, small transit, backhoe/loaders, street sweepers, and fire apparatus.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance to fire apparatus pumps, nozzles, gauges, valves, generators, and systems to ensure they will perform under emergency conditions and prepares firetrucks for annual certified inspection.
- May mentor Fleet Technicians with general repairs of fire apparatus (ladders, tenders, pumpers, etc.), solid waste vehicles, construction equipment, bucket trucks, small transit, and other fleet equipment.
- Landfill Assignment
•Performs major/minor repairs and preventative maintenance on various gasoline and diesel-powered heavy-duty equipment such as compactors, bulldozers, scrapers, graders, loaders, backhoes, water pulls and trucks, solid waste trucks/roll offs, tractors, and heavy-duty trucks.
•Repairs and maintains all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic systems.
•Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance to groundwater well pumps, condensate well pumps, condensate flare injection nozzles, gas collection system gauges, valves, compressors, generators, and other landfill systems to ensure they will perform under normal operating and emergency conditions.
•May mentor other Technicians with general repairs of landfill heavy equipment solid waste/roll off vehicles, construction equipment, and general landfill facility equipment.

Troubleshoots a variety of computerized systems using scan tools and web-based systems to diagnose and execute repairs.Performs repairs according to service manuals, schematics, and hydraulic flow charts.Estimates the cost and time of repairs and determines the most cost-effective methods.Fabricates and welds minor and major projects.Test drives all applications to ensure all repairs and maintenance have been completed.Consults with staff to determine the parts and supplies needed to conduct repairs.Makes emergency service calls for all disabled vehicles and equipment.Orders supplies and materials and logs them into inventory or their work order.Uses and disposes of hazardous materials according to established guidelines.Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition.Keeps work area and shop clean.Operates city vehicles.Required to be on occasional standby on a rotation schedule.Performs other duties as assigned.Five (5) years of experience as a skilled equipment mechanic at journey level, in a specialized equipment repair field, including heavy gasoline and diesel-powered equipment repair, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and industrial equipment, including experience with gas and electric welding equipment and five (5) current ASE Certifications within six (6) months of hire. Positions assigned to the Landfill require the completion of five (5) CAT certified courses in area of assignment within six (6) months of hire.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education. Knowledge of:- Principles and practices of the mechanical trades, including the use and care of tools and equipment
- Occupational hazards and safety procedures associated with mechanical maintenance work, industrial electricity, hydraulics, and heavy equipment
- Welding and welding techniques
- Proper use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines
Ability to:- Take direction, receive training, and develop technical skills
- Determine and correct causes of vehicle and equipment malfunctions and defects
- Mentor other fleet technicians
- Interpret technical manuals and related diagrams and instructions
- Read and comprehend Materials Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in the work environment
- Estimate the time and cost of repairs
- Diagnose defects in all vehicles and equipment, including computerized troubleshooting for minor and major repairs
- Determine mechanical repair needs
- Prepare and maintain all related records and reports
- Work cooperatively with others
- Communicate unsafe conditions or accidents and injuries promptly to the supervisor
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards
- Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
Special Requirements:- Valid Arizona Driver's license.
- Some assignments will also require a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's license required at the time of application or upon hire, and passenger, tanker, and hazardous waste endorsements are required within 60 days of employment.
- Assignments at the Landfill require the ability to obtain a Class “B” CDL with tanker and Haz-Mat endorsements within 180 days of hire.
•Assignments in Automotive and Heavy Equipment require five (5) current ASE Certifications within six (6) months of hire.
•Assignments in Landfill require completion of five (5) CAT Certified Courses within six (6) months of hire. - Must provide adequate personal tools to perform journey-level work.
- Will be required to workday or evening shift as assigned.
- Will be required to work standby occasionally for holidays and callback shifts as needed.
- Air conditioning repair certification within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain emissions testing certification.
- This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
