Job summary

Elizabeth River Crossings seeks a Shop Foreman to lead the fleet and equipment team, supervising maintenance, repairs, inventory, and work orders for ERC-owned vehicles and equipment. This is a working position with hands-on duties in addition to administrative tasks.

You will plan schedules, direct daily operations, ensure QA/QC, manage parts inventory, and coordinate with contractors while training new staff and maintaining safety compliance.

Position Summary

The Shop Foreman is responsible for leading the fleet and equipment team on a daily basis. This shall include oversight of work assignments, repairs, inventory management, work orders, quality assurance, and overall coordination within the fleet department of all ERC-owned fleet vehicles and equipment. This is a “working” position, meaning the Shop Foreman will be expected to perform hands‑on maintenance activities in addition to administrative duties.

Essential Duties And Accountabilities

• Assumes responsibility of oversight of the fleet and equipment team on a daily basis.
• Directs daily operations via input from the management team. Obtains and conveys information and communications as appropriate.
• Plan, schedule, and execute work as required by corrective and/or preventive maintenance needs by assigning and coordinating with personnel.
• Develop schedules and programs, prioritize response and repairs as required.
• Produce daily work assignments to comply with workload.
• Oversee QA/QC functions of work orders within the Maintenance Management System.
• Produce reports, plans, and work orders as needed to properly document findings and actions.
• Check completed assignments to ensure quality and workmanship meets, or exceeds, standards and requirements.
• Coordinate schedules with other sections and departments.
• Work closely with contractors, vendors, and repair facilities as required.
• Purchase materials, supplies, and equipment following all procurement guidelines.
• Checks and maintains adequate inventory and spare parts, keeps the management team informed of shortages and/or needs.
• Controls and accounts for equipment and materials.
• Aid in time and performance management duties as required, time-clock verifications, time approvals, and input on employee performance.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the management team.
• Assumes responsibility for ensuring safety and training requirements are met by the fleet and equipment team.
• Provide on-the-job training for new employees, document results that show acceptable performance, and areas that need improvement.
• Ensure employees meet all recurring training requirements.
• Verify all employees have, and use, personal protective equipment (PPE) used in correct manner.
• Ensure all duties are performed in a safe manner.
• Assumes responsibility for these service areas.

• Schedule, assign, plan, prioritize, and monitor the work of subordinate mechanics performing a variety of tasks.

• Independently perform safe, effective, timely repairs and maintenance to facility equipment.
• Perform a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance.
• Perform Annual State Vehicle Inspections.
• Record and maintain work orders, service records, materials used, etc.
• Accurate and timely submission of all reports.
• Lead inventory activities (ordering, purchasing, maintaining stock levels, etc.).
• Safe disposal/removal of all hazardous wastes generated by oil changes, contaminated fuel, etc.
• General housekeeping duties of the shop area.
• Use extensive knowledge of available materials and the latest technologies to plan and select the materials and tools to be used for repair and maintain facility equipment
• Remains up-to-date on information about new technology in materials, methods, and equipment.
• Perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all established safety guidelines, policies, and laws to include but not limited to vehicle operation and maintaining a safe driving record with zero preventable accidents.

Experience And Educational Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent with prior experience repairing and maintaining a wide variety of equipment (gas/diesel operated equipment such as vans, trucks, wreckers, front‑end loaders, etc.). Previous experience in a lead role or directing the work of others.

• Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat

• Work is performed both inside and outside. Subject to weather.
• Must work in a very noisy environment, which requires workers to shout to communicate.
• Must work under hazardous conditions including high places, chemical exposures, electrical current, moving machinery, exposure to blood, etc.
• The worker is subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system. Must work using a tight-fitting facepiece respirator.
