Job summary

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Mechanical Services, is hiring a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to diagnose and repair fleet equipment. The role offers full-time employment with a salary rate per hour and a trainee option with a lower pay rate.

Requires 4 years of combined education and experience in automotive/heavy equipment and a valid driver’s license. Qualified applicants will perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs, while adhering to DOT

Qualifications

  • Equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after high school in automotive/heavy equipment.
  • Education/experience must be in automotive mechanics or heavy equipment repair.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL-B preferred or to be obtained within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose fleet equipment malfunctions using computer software and repair manuals; perform repairs and road-test.
  • Inspect vehicles annually and certify compliance with NH DMV safety requirements.
  • Install and repair hydraulic systems and perform welding/fabrication as needed.
  • Respond to emergency roadside repair calls for 24-hour fleet service.
  • Overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials, and related components to minimize replacement costs.
  • Document maintenance and repairs for vehicle life history files.
