Job summary

American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) is seeking a Fleet Deckhand in Cairo, IL on a full-time basis. The role involves assisting with cargo loading/unloading, inspection for safety, and rigging during tow building, docking, and towing operations.

The schedule is 8 days on, 4 days off, with opportunities to go home between rotations. You will work with a crew on inland barge operations, perform basic vessel maintenance, and uphold safety, teamwork, and reliability standards essential to our

Qualifications

• Must live within 50 miles of Cairo, IL.
• Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks.
• Ability to carry an 80 lb wire for 200 ft.
• Must obtain TWIC card.
• Ability to work in inclement weather outdoors.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Basic understanding of navigation and safety procedures.
• Positive attitude and adaptability to a unique schedule.
• Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Must pass health questionnaire and physical abilities test.
• No current criminal charges or probation.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
• Adhere to ACBL policies, USCG and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the safe loading and unloading of cargo.
• Inspect, correct, or notify others of safety conditions affecting crew or cargo.
• Handle rigging during barge tow building, locking, and docking activities.
• Assist with loading/unloading materials to/from docks, barges, and boats.
• Examine cables, wires, and lines and tighten/loosen as needed.
• Secure barges with tow wires and cables in a safe, compliant manner.
• Perform basic vessel maintenance such as painting, cleaning, changing oil and filters.
• Demonstrate integrity, mutual care, personal responsibility, agility, customer focus and teamwork.
• Be an active crew member and contribute to a positive work environment.
