TITLE: Flat Rate Technician

REPORTING TO: Service Manager EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt / hourly

General Summary
The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) lives VIP’s mission to EARN AUTOMOTIVE CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE by learning and living the VIP culture and following VIP processes to ensure that customers get a different & better experience. The Tech must work effectively and safely to ensure good communication, teamwork, and operation in serving customers. The Tech is responsible for diagnosing automotive systems, repairing and replacing automotive parts, fluids, tires, and accessories, and ensuring these services are done right the first time. The Tech is expected to comply with safety, loss prevention, customer service programs, policies, procedures, and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prioritize workplace safety by following all safety policies, completing training, locking unsafe equipment, and reporting hazards.
  • Provide diagnosis, repair, and maintenance services for automotive systems, including those covered by ASE certifications.
  • Complete Service Work Orders, MPI, and support customer engagement processes.
  • Obtain parts from designated team members and return unused parts, cores, batteries, and tires appropriately.
  • Maintain productivity standards and follow VIP quality service policies.
  • Complete required training and certifications, including becoming a Licensed State Vehicle Inspector and ASE certified as applicable.
  • Support and deliver the 5-for-5 process to educate customers about their vehicle’s condition.
  • Participate in meetings, training, and shop maintenance to ensure safety and quality standards.
  • Ensure vehicle safety through road tests and proper vehicle handling post-service.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including shop equipment and facilities.
  • Enforce compliance with safety, environmental, and operational regulations.

Performance Measurement

  • Maintain minimum productivity levels (e.g., 50% billed hours to worked hours).
  • Ensure work quality to minimize callbacks and rework.

Standard Work Week

  • Typically 5 days, 40 hours per week.
  • Arrive on time, prepared to work, and work scheduled hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of automotive systems diagnosis and repair.
  • Effective communication skills with customers and team members.
  • Minimum of one year in automotive service; technical school or college preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ASE certifications (G1, A4, A5, or others as specified).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work indoors in a shop environment with exposure to weather, chemicals, noise, and mechanical hazards. Physical activities include standing, reaching, climbing, and lifting, with safety equipment used as required.
