EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non‑exempt / hourly

General Summary

The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) is dedicated to earning automotive customers for life by learning and living the VIP culture and following VIP processes to deliver a different and better customer experience. The Tech must work effectively and safely and communicate well with teammates to serve customers. Responsibilities include diagnosing automotive systems and performing repair, replacement, and maintenance of parts, fluids, tires, and accessories and ensuring these services are performed correctly the first time. The Tech is expected to comply with company safety, loss prevention, customer service programs, policies, procedures, and all applicable regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Ensure workplace safety is Priority #1. Follow all safety policies, complete all required safety training, lock out unsafe equipment, and report unsafe conditions or actions to management.
  2. Provide automotive systems diagnosis, repair, and maintenance services for customers, covering all systems listed in the ASE series of certifications:
    • A2 – Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
    • A3 – Manual Drive Train & Axles
    • A5 – Brakes
    • A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems
    • A7 – Heating & Air Conditioning
    • A8 – Engine Performance
  3. Ensure a valid Service Work Order is initiated before starting work on a vehicle and display it visibly while servicing.
  4. Complete a Multiple Point Inspection (MPI) before starting work on every vehicle and actively support and participate in the 5-for-5 Customer Engagement Process.
  5. Return the Service Work Order and any required printouts to the Service Desk with the vehicle keys upon completion of service.
  6. Obtain needed parts only from a member of the Desk Team (Service Manager, Assistant Manager, Service Writer, or Tech/Advisor) and return all unused parts to the Desk Team after completion.
  7. Return cores, batteries, and used tires to designated security areas for handling.
  8. Maintain a minimum 16‑week average productivity based on position (detail omitted but required).
  9. Follow VIP’s quality service policies to ensure work meets VIP quality standards.
  10. Complete all required training and certification for the position:
    • Take and pass all required LMS training.
    • Complete all safe equipment operation training.
    • Become a Licensed State Vehicle Inspector (state‑specific requirement).
    • Become T.I.A basic automotive tire service (BATS) certified and T.I.A. advanced TPMS certified.
    • Become ASE certified as appropriate:
      • Technician: G1, A4, and A5.
      • ASE Technician: Four of the A‑Series ASE certifications.
      • Master Technician: All eight A‑Series A1–A8.
    • Train, support, and deliver the 5‑for‑5 process to educate customers about their vehicle’s condition.
    • Attend meetings and training sessions as needed (typically several times per year).
  11. Maintain quality, safety, and housekeeping responsibilities:
    • Road test vehicles as necessary after service.
    • Secure and lock customer vehicles when returning to the parking lot.
    • Install seat and steering wheel covers and floor mats before entering customers’ vehicles.
    • Keep the work area clean and free of debris, cores, unused parts, and stray tools.
    • Clean shop equipment immediately after use by removing debris, grease, chemicals, etc.
    • Participate in daily and weekly shop maintenance programs as designated.
    • Comply with safety and loss prevention programs, including protective eyewear.
  12. Additional responsibilities (performs other functions as required):
    • Maintain technical capabilities to ensure safe use of service equipment and maintain ASE certification status.
    • Review and authorize time worked and attendance records in DAYFORCE.
    • Comply with VIP’s culture and service standards.
    • Participate actively in team meetings.
    • Work with Service Manager to ensure shop equipment meets safety operation standards.
    • Comply with regulations for hazardous waste disposal.
  13. Facility and equipment maintenance:
    • Ensure facility maintenance, appearance, and condition meet security, safety, and environmental codes.
    • Ensure equipment maintenance, appearance, and condition are satisfactory for customer needs.
    • Take steps to maintain a clean service department throughout the business day.
    • Enter any facility or equipment issues into the database.
  14. Procedural compliance:
    • Enforce strict compliance with the service Code of Ethics and all municipal, state, and federal regulations and procedures.
Performance Measurement
  • Maintain minimum 50% productivity, measured as billed hours/worked hours.
  • Minimize come backs, ensuring work is completed properly the first time.
Standard Management Work Week
  • SCHEDULE: Standard expectation: 5‑day work week, 40 hours per week.
  • ATTENDANCE: Arrive prior to each shift, ready to perform duties at shift start time, and work all scheduled hours as directed by management.
Required Qualifications
  1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Read, analyze, and interpret technical instructions, journals, and procedures, or governmental regulations.
    • Explain vehicle information to customers and respond to questions from coworkers.
    • Diagnose and recommend solutions to basic automotive problems.
    • Understand and apply instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
    • Perform required types of automotive services listed above.
  2. Minimum Education and/or Experience Level:
    • One year of related experience in automotive service field.
    • Completion of a two‑year college or technical school program (recommended).
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
    • Current, valid driver’s license issued in state of residence.
    • ASE Certification G1 – Maintenance and light repair (recommended).
    • ASE Certification A4 – Suspension & Steering.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those associate encounters while performing the essential functions of the Installation Technician job. Job duties are performed within an indoor service department (generally 800 to 2500 sq. ft.), which opens to the outdoors via overhead doors. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is exposed to varying weather, climate, and temperature conditions, mechanical equipment, automotive and industrial cleaning chemicals, and noise levels that may reach 110 decibels depending upon type of service being performed. Protective eyewear must be worn in the service area at all times.

Physical demands include reaching, standing, pushing/pulling, walking, climbing, and kneeling, with more than 21 lbs lifting for the majority of the time, and requiring clear vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
