Job description

Description

The Aircraft Mechanic troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems to ensure aircraft remains in safe operating condition. Maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty. Receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, and will occasionally lead teams through more complex aircraft-related tasks.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
  2. Replaces or repairs worn or damaged components, such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine-mounted gearboxes, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment; removes engines using hoists or forklifts, inspects parts for wear or defects, and repairs or replaces defective parts before reassembling and installing the engine.
  3. Adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories; performs preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections; services aircraft by flushing crankcases, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
  4. Uses technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems to diagnose malfunctions.
  5. Restores equipment condition and operation using specialized expertise.
  6. Interprets technical documentation such as blueprints or manuals to solve moderate to complex problems.
  7. Supervises aircraft jacking and towing; verifies work completion; services engines and airframe components at line stations; and may specialize in structural, precision, or functional parts and assemblies, including engine repair.
  8. Makes entries in aircraft logs and records; prioritizes workload to meet schedules.
  9. Complies with all current sections of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series and applicable aircraft maintenance standards.
  10. Maintains working knowledge of technical publications, NAMP, and NALCOMIS applications.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical troubleshooting, repair procedures, and parts replacement.
  • Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
  • Basic electrical theory knowledge.
  • Familiarity with aircraft tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and shears.
  • Proficiency in technical publications and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Knowledge of corrosion control techniques and hazardous waste procedures.
  • Understanding of aircraft sub-systems, including maintenance parameters and system operations.
  • Valid US State driver’s license; ability to read and interpret data; fluent in English; ability to obtain a government flight line driver’s license and secret security clearance.
Experience & Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of specialized aircraft structural repair courses.
  • 2-4 years of recent experience in repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft such as AT-6, C-12, C-26, F/A-18, F-35, NU-1B, T-6B, T-38C, U-6A, AV-8B, or similar; 4 years preferred.
Physical Requirements / Working Environment:
  • Work may be in hangars or outdoors, exposed to weather, noise, fumes, electrical hazards, and moving mechanical parts.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, climb, crouch, crawl, handle objects, lift up to 50 pounds, and operate various equipment and tools.
  • Visual and auditory acuity required for inspecting aircraft and reading instruments.
