Job summary

Harmer, in partnership with a client in the Greater Houston area, seeks a Fixed Asset Accounting Manager to own accounting and controls for assets, inventory and equipment, partnering with Operations and leadership.

This hands-on role covers asset lifecycle from capital projects and additions through verification, utilization and disposal, with opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, and drive reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience focused on fixed assets and inventory.
  • Hands-on fixed asset accounting including capitalization, depreciation, disposals.
  • Experience with inventory accounting, reconciliations and physical counts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage fixed asset subledger including capitalization, depreciation, and asset classifications.
  • Oversee construction in progress and project-to-asset transfers.
  • Review capex and ensure GAAP-compliant recording.
  • Perform monthly close activities and reconciliations for fixed assets.
  • Coordinate asset tagging, verifications, audits, impairments, and disposals.
  • Oversee inventory accounting, including valuation and reserves.
  • Coordinate cycle counts and resolve variances.
  • Reconcile subledgers to GL and address discrepancies.
  • Support ASC 842 lease accounting and internal controls.
  • Develop reporting on asset utilization and capital spending.
  • Partner with Operations to improve asset utilization and working capital.
  • Support audits and maintain accounting documentation.

Job description

Harmer has partnered with our client in their search for a Fixed Asset Accounting Manager. This role will be on-site on the east side of the Greater Houston area and will own the accounting and controls surrounding fixed assets, inventory and equipment while partnering closely with Operations and accounting leadership.

This is a hands-on position with responsibility across the full asset lifecycle, from capital projects and asset additions through physical verification, utilization and disposal.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Manage the fixed asset subledger, including capitalization, depreciation, useful lives and asset classifications
  • Oversee construction-in-progress activity and project-to-asset transfers
  • Review capital expenditures and ensure activity is recorded in accordance with company policy and US GAAP
  • Perform monthly close activities, account reconciliations, rollforwards and variance analysis related to fixed assets
  • Coordinate asset tagging, physical verification, periodic audits, impairments and disposals
  • Oversee inventory accounting, including valuation, reserves, shrink and related reconciliations
  • Coordinate cycle counts and physical inventories and investigate resulting variances
  • Reconcile fixed asset and inventory subledgers to the general ledger and resolve discrepancies
  • Monitor equipment allocations and usage and evaluate maintenance costs for appropriate capitalization or expense treatment
  • Support equipment lease accounting under ASC 842
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls surrounding assets, inventory and equipment
  • Develop reporting and metrics around asset utilization, inventory turns and aging, and capital spending
  • Partner with Operations to improve asset utilization and working capital management
  • Support internal and external audit requests and maintain related accounting documentation
What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 5+ years of accounting experience with a focus on fixed assets and inventory
  • Strong hands-on fixed asset accounting experience, including capitalization, depreciation and disposals
  • Experience with inventory accounting, reconciliations and physical inventory counts
