Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Fitter Welder Apprentice in San Antonio, TX, to gain hands-on experience in fit-up, fabrication, and welding under the guidance of skilled professionals in a manufacturing plant.

You will operate a Miller Aluma Pro MIG gun and plasma cutting tools, read blueprints, and complete tasks safely. A minimum 6 months MIG welding experience and passing 2G plate and 6G pipe tests are required, along with a HS diploma or GED and good teamwork.

Job description

Fitter Welder Apprentice

Location: San Antonio, TX plant. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain hands‑on experience in the manufacturing industry. You will work under the guidance of experienced professionals while developing essential skills in fit up, fabrication, and welding.

What you will do
  • Take responsibility for local delivery and execution of the fit up, fabrication, and core welding to vendors and managers in accordance with Johnson Controls principles, corporate policies and procedures, and plant operations.
  • Perform a variety of employment‑related functions to enhance employee engagement, safety and health, productivity, and ensure employee compliance with company policies in a manufacturing facility.
How you will do it
  • Apply a minimum of 6 months of MIG welding experience to product.
  • Operate a Miller Aluma Pro MIG gun and manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and plasma cutting processes.
  • Operate manual and semi‑automatic flame‑cutting equipment.
  • Maintain safe work practices, conduct technical inspections, and prepare input for management and log reports.
  • Read and review blueprints and specifications to ensure drawings function as designed for intended use.
  • Ensure accuracy and completion of assigned tasks and projects, keeping detailed and accurate reports and documentation.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology, compliance, and repair/rework techniques.
  • Complete motor coupling installations.
  • Participate in training programs as trainee or trainer as required.
  • Practice and promote 5S throughout the facility.
  • Participate in Kaizen events.
  • Complete other assigned work as required.
What we look for
  • Successfully passed 2G plate welding test and 6G short arc pipe welding test within Johnson Controls – San Antonio.
  • Experience with hand tools, machinery, and equipment for metal manufacturing.
  • Standard blueprint knowledge.
  • Work with supervisors and lead men to ensure continuous improvements, hit quotas, and weld according to pre‑set parameters using GMAW processes.
  • Ability to scan in and out of work orders.
  • Proven knowledge and skill in operating all metalworking machinery.
  • Ability to read and understand production drawings, blueprints, work orders, and other written instructions.
  • Minimum of 6 months of MIG alloy and steel welding experience.
  • Follow Operation Description Sheet (ODS) and training documents.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certifications.
  • Follow all safety policies and protocols.
  • Quality orientation and strong attention to detail.
  • Time management and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Welding technical school certification.
  • GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) welding experience.
  • TIG welding experience (1+ year).
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations.
  • Highly flexible with solid interpersonal skills for diverse working environments.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally.

Hiring hourly rate: $21.50 (Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data).
