Fitter/Welder

Position Summary:

Responsible for assembling and welding metal components to create structures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Weld Duties:

1. Perform welding tasks as directed under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
2. Identify and adhere to the appropriate Weld Procedure for the task at hand.
3. Provide quality welds that meet specifications and are approved by the Quality Control Inspector and Production Manager. This includes, but is not limited to, proper weld size, weld profile, cleaning, preheating, etc.
4. Complete any relevant specific job duties as required by immediate supervision.
5. Confirm temporary bracing is installed as needed to avoid distortion and remove bracing when complete.
6. Operate punches, grinders, drills, saws, oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, and other basic equipment & hand tools.
7. Move and/or organize material as needed to support production tasks.
8. Maintain a clean and orderly workstation.

Fit Duties:

1. Perform fitting tasks under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
2. Assess blueprints, drawings, and specifications to establish work requirements.
3. Organize work orders, and prepare accurate reports regarding tools, equipment, materials daily.
4. Conduct exact measurements, layout, and fitting tasks per drawings/diagrams in accordance with Southland's procedures.
5. Provide visual quality assurance.
6. Complete any relevant specific job duties as required by immediate supervision.
7. Operate punches, grinders, drills, saws, oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, and other basic equipment and hand tools.
8. Cut, drill, bevel and grind subparts as required to perform a quality finished product.
9. Perform welding prep (grinding, beveling, etc.) as required.
10. Install temporary bracing as required to prevent distortion during the welding process.

Qualifications and Requirements:

1. Written and verbal communication skills.
2. Valid driver's license.
3. Knowledge of basic shop mathematics.
4. Experience in heavy structural fabrication.
5. Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings and welding symbols.
6. Proficient in effective operation of welding equipment.
7. 1-2 years welding experience with some flux core welding (FCAW).
8. Must pass welding test as part of the application process.

Physical Requirements:

1. Adhere to all Southland Steel Fabricators, Inc. Safety Rules, Policies, and Procedures.
2. Maintain orderly and clean work area.
3. Attend all required safety meetings.
4. Inspect the welding equipment each day to ensure it meets safety standards with special attention to welding leads.
5. Inspect tools daily before each use, to include extension cords.
6. Always use hand and power tools safely with correct guards in place.
7. Wear personal protective equipment in accordance with policy and adequate for specific tasks.
8. Welding - Wear specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:
9. Welders helmet with appropriately shaded filter lens, with safety glasses under helmet.
10. Fire/flame resistant clothing.
11. Heavy flame-resistant gloves.
12. Respirators when welding harmful metals or when ventilation is not adequate.
13. Steel/hard toe boots.
14. Hearing protection.
15. Cutting steel with torch:
16. Wear either properly shaded safety glasses with a face shield or cutting goggles, hearing protection, steel/hard toe boots, gloves, and fire/flame resistant clothing.
17. Use proper friction lighters or other approved devices to light the torch.

Physical and Safety Requirements:

To do the job, the following physical requirements are necessary:

1. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
2. Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift tools, equipment, or materials 50 lbs. or less.
3. Ability to withstand occasional bending, squatting, or crouching.
4. Ability to frequently handle (hold, seize, grasp, turn, etc.) tools, equipment, or material.
5. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, including cold, heat, and humidity.
