Job summary

Saronic Technologies is seeking a skilled shipfitter to join our United States shipyard team. You will read blueprints, lay out piping, weld foundations, and install large ship machinery in a fast-paced environment.

You must be comfortable working aloft, in confined spaces, and collaborating with welders, fitters, electricians, and other trades. We offer comprehensive benefits and competitive compensation.

Qualifications

  • Experience in shipbuilding or metal fabrication is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Proficiency in pipe fabrication, welding, and assembly per specs.
  • Comfort working in confined spaces and at height.
  • Strong focus on safety and teamwork in a fast-paced yard.

Responsibilities

  • Cut, weld, and assemble metal structures per blueprints.
  • Plan pipe system layout and install fittings and equipment.
  • Inspect and test installed pipelines and components.
  • Collaborate with welders, fitters, electricians, and other trades.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area and comply with PPE policies.

Job description

Technical Knowledge / Job Summary
  • Read, interpret, and follow blueprints and sketches to understand the specifications of a project
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Figure material take‑offs on drawings for required cut lengths
  • Mark reference points and transpose them to workpiece using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and/or soapstone
  • Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair per specifications
  • Ability to use rigging equipment
  • Will be required to work aloft (on scaffold or on manlifts) and in confined spaces
  • On‑site training is provided
Job Proficiency
  • Cutting (circular, reciprocating, miter, and chop saws), grinding, and assembly of metal structural parts using fitting aids and rigging equipment to align parts according to blueprints
  • Tacking and welding of foundations and installing temporary fasteners to hold structural members in place
  • Properly implement SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux Core), and GMAW‑P process (multi‑pass) for tack welding as needed
  • Properly use oxy‑acetylene torch as needed
  • Fabricate components using various hand and power tools
  • Use pipe cutting machine and/or beveling machine to cut pipe to required length
  • Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and heavy hammers
  • Straighten warped or bent parts using sledge, hand torch, straightening press, and push‑pull methods
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torch
  • Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment using welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joints
  • Inspect and test installed systems and pipelines using pressure gauges, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods
  • Perform layout, fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of pipe systems according to specifications
  • Install fittings and equipment
  • Install flanges, collars, penetrations, skid frames, foundations
  • Install and align large ship machinery
  • Install windows and doors
  • Install mast
  • Inspect all equipment daily (torch, torch hoses, grinder, levels, tapes, etc.)

Pre‑employment skills testing may be required during the interview process.

Culture and Collaboration
  • Follow all shipyard safety policies, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and confined space protocols
  • Assist in the training and development of junior fitters
  • Collaborate and communicate with welders, metal fitters, pipefitters, electricians, and other trades as required to complete vessel construction or repair and to maintain efficient work flows
  • Work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced ship production environment
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward customers and represent Saronic professionally
  • Make a personal commitment and be accountable for HSE results, driving toward the achievement of defined goals
