Job summary

John Knox Village in Lee's Summit, MO, seeks an energetic fitness instructor to lead land and aquatic classes across two fitness centers, ensuring safe, engaging experiences for residents.

You will collaborate with the fitness team to tailor senior-friendly workouts (floor, chair, water), monitor safety, and help residents stay active and independent; required certifications include CPR/AED and fitness credentials.

Qualifications

  • Current nationally recognized certification in the specialty fitness discipline.
  • Personal Training or Group fitness certification through a nationally recognized organization (e.g., ACE, AFAA, ACSM) or equivalent preferred.
  • If a class requires a nationally recognized specialty certification, the instructor must obtain and provide proof of certification prior to teaching the course.
  • If teaching an aquatic class, Aquatic Fitness Certification (AFAA, ACE, AEA, Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Certification or related and/or Lifeguard Certification is required.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (current) required.
  • Current valid driver’s license is required with proof of insurance required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the fitness team to support program goals.
  • Develop positive rapport with fitness center members to support engagement in fitness programming.
  • Lead senior-appropriate fitness classes (floor, chair and/or water), adapting as appropriate for varying abilities and mobility levels, always demonstrating proper exercise techniques and monitoring participant safety.
  • Responsible for making sure that the exercise area and equipment are safe and clean.
  • Fully utilize the Fliip app and other fitness apps to support Village fitness programming.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Maintain required fitness and safety certifications.
  • Handle stress well and get along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of workplace conduct.

John Knox Village is seeking an energetic, compassionate, and highly motivatedfitness instructorto join our fitness team. As part of our vibrant senior living community, you’ll play a key role in helping residents stay active, independent, and engaged through a variety of land and aquatic fitness programs. Our Fitness Instructors provide safe, effective, and enjoyable exercise experiences for residents across two fitness centers, indoor and outdoor pools, group exercise studios, and recreational spaces such as pickleball courts and a full gymnasium. This role blends teaching, coaching, motivation, and relationship-building to support each individual in reaching their fitness goals and improving their quality of life.

JOB SUMMARY

Support fitness program members in reaching fitness goals through leading safe, engaging, and effective specialty fitness classes tailored to participant needs and abilities. Supportive of the Village’s mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes training as required by policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The responsibilities described above represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to perform all assigned responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current nationally recognized certification in the specialty fitness discipline.

Knowledge and Skills (required unless otherwise noted)
  • Basic level knowledge of Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities at the same time.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; calculating figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Experience
  • 1+ years’ experience in Fitness, Therapy or related field required.
  • 1+ years’ experience in directing exercise programs required
  • Experience in directing exercise programs for senior adults is preferred.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The associate is subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • The associate is exposed to infectious diseases.
  • The associate is required to function around individuals with challenged mental capacities.
  • Required to drive from one location to another if necessary for services provided.
  • Depending on services offered in the department, this position may have “on-call” responsibilities.
  • All associates may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
