Job summary

YMCA of Springfield is seeking a friendly Fitness Assistant to help keep Health and Wellness spaces clean, safe and welcoming for members. You will greet guests, answer general questions about programming, and schedule orientations for youth and adults.

This role requires a flexible schedule, early mornings, evenings, and some weekends, plus the ability to multitask, enter data, and work with diverse groups.

Qualifications

  • Self-motivated to serve members, guests, and staff.
  • Must be at least 16 years old and able to perform essential duties.
  • At least one year of exercise experience is preferred.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work with integrity.
  • Comfortable interacting with diverse populations.
  • Detail oriented with strong data-entry and office skills.
  • Willingness to complete required trainings ( CPR, first aid, safety ).
  • Flexible schedule with mornings/evenings and some weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Clean all surfaces on machines and wipe down equipment.
  • Vacuum around and under equipment and in studios.
  • Dust and wipe surfaces in Health & Wellness spaces.
  • Refill wipe containers and maintain cleanliness.
  • Perform light maintenance and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Schedule maintenance and orient members on machines.
  • Coordinate first-time and youth orientations with coaches and trainers.

Overview

The Fitness Assistantunderstands the importance of cleanliness and order inall Health and Wellness spacesin order toprovide ahigh endand safeexperience for our members at the YMCA of Springfield. The Fitness Assistantis responsible forthe general upkeepinthedepartment spacesand iscapableof answeringgeneral questionsregardingHealth & Wellness programming and use of equipment.The Fitness Assistantis capable of performingYouth and AdultFitness Machine Orientationsfor new members and promotes member wellness and engagementin accordance withYMCA policies and procedures.Fitness Assistantis responsible forscheduling maintenancefor non-functioning machines and pairing members with personal trainers.

Responsibilities
  • Cleanall surfaces onmachines with provided cleaning solution.
  • Vacuum around and under machines,free weights, equipment in Group Fitness Studios and Y-Perform.
  • Dust and wipe down all surfacesintheallHealth and Wellness spaces.
  • Refill wipe containers in Fitness Centers,Group Fitness Studiosand Y-Perform.
  • Perform light maintenancesuch as but not limited to, restart/test of cardio and strength equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues anddetermineif a maintenance call is needed.
  • Schedule maintenance on non-functioning equipmentin a timely manner.
  • Rerack weights properly, re-arrange weightsproperlyand put equipment back in proper storage.
  • Schedule and perform fitness machine orientationsfor new members.
  • Schedule and perform youth fitness machine orientations for ages 9-12.
  • Coordinate each first-time scheduling of program sessions for members and program participants.Connect and pair clients with coaches and trainers and ensure the client contact information in DAXKO (software operating program) is correct.
  • Administrative support to ensure efficient operation of the Fitness & Wellness Department. Support the Fitness & Wellness Director through a variety of tasks related to organization and communication.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned

Child Abuse Policies & Prevention:

The YMCA enforces policies to prevent child abuse. Allegations or suspicions are taken seriously and reported to authorities. Procedures include unscheduled visits, open doors for parents, and a code of conduct for staff. We screen carefully to prevent abusers from being hired and provide child abuse prevention training to staff. Employees whofail tosupport these policies will be subject to discipline, up to termination.

  • Prefer knowledge of, andpreviousexperiencewith,diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge or experience in wellness or fitness is helpful.
  • Must be data centered, detail oriented, and be able to multi-task.
  • Knowledgeable about office processes and procedures.
  • Comfortable with data entry, computer functions, and phone callfollow ups.
  • Skill, ability, and knowledge to completetrainingsand general requirements within orientation period, 7 –90 days.
  • Ability to complete all requiredtrainingswithin60 daysof employment, including but not limited to CPR, first aid, Living Our Cause, DCFS Mandated Report, andto maintainthese certifications as current as outlined by regulations or requirements.

    • Walking up and down stairs multiple times a day,standing, walking, leaning, kneeling, and bending.
    • Racking weights, moving chairs for classes,normally to highlifting up to 70 lbs.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
