The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fishis recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Palmer!

What you will be doing:
Under supervision, the Fishery Biologist 1 assists with planning, field work, data collection, supervision, and reporting of management projects and activities related to recreational fisheries in the Northern Cook Inlet Management Area.

This position serves as a field biologist on several stock assessment projects that will collect vital information on salmon stocks in the Northern Cook Inlet Management Area. As part of the Palmer management team, this position will help collect data the will directly inform management of a natural resource vital to our community.

Fisheries Biologists with the Division of Sportfish perform the field work that is vital to collecting data used to manage our fisheries. This position is an entry level fisheries biologist, working on projects and collecting information needed to manage our Northen Cook Inlet fisheries. The incumbent in this position will get to work with and learn how to use state of the art equipment and technologies. Several biologists working on Palmer area Sportfish projects have gone on to more senior level biologist positions in Palmer and throughout the State of Alaska.

The working environment you can expect:
This position will be stationed at the Palmer ADF&G office. The duties of this position include daily operation of field camps and weirs located on public waterways while safely performing all duties. This position assists in daily reporting, analysis, and quality control of data collected in the field. This position directs the daily duties of fish & wildlife technicians. SCUBA diving in this position requires that the person is in good physical condition and able to pass a physical in compliance with the ADF&G Dive Safety Manual. Working with SCUBA equipment requires lifting and movement of objects 50 or more pounds, and may expose the incumbent to inclement weather, and potential water borne pathogens.

Who we are looking for:
The incumbent should have experience in the following areas:
  • Operating and maintaing various sized outboard motors and boats on shallow fast moving rivers.
  • Field camp logistics including equipment purchasing, camp setup, removal, and construction.
  • Crew leading of field operations, and training of lower level fish & wildlife technicians.
  • Fish sampling, tagging and data collection according to written plans and procedures.
  • Operating, installing, maintaining, and removing floating resistance board weirs in rivers prone to flooding and dangerous conditions.

Special Note:
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Wildlife Safety Training & First Aid/CPR training, Oxygen administration training, Shotgun training and SCUBA certification, specifically, Open Water Diver Certification with Dry Suit certification. - provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
