Job summary

Oceana International Headquarters in Washington, DC is seeking a Fishery Innovation Intern to join the U.S. campaigns focused on reducing entanglement of whales in fishing gear. You will synthesize scientific, regulatory, and stakeholder information, and help document where and how innovative systems are tested or deployed.

The intern works with the U.S. Fisheries Innovation Director and multidisciplinary teams on a hybrid schedule, contributing to research and a forthcoming report while gaining

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a graduate program or holder of a master’s/doctoral degree in marine science, fisheries science, marine policy, environmental policy, natural resource management, public policy, or closely related field.
• Experience in fisheries research or innovative gear testing is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Research and compile information on innovative fishing gear technologies used in U.S. fisheries.
• Summarize regulatory context for innovative gear across state and federal fisheries.
• Assist with outreach to decision makers and stakeholders; draft correspondence and schedule meetings.
• Support stakeholder interviews by preparing questions, taking notes, and asking follow‑ups.
• Contribute research and draft sections of a report on findings across U.S. fisheries.
• Update and maintain a database of testing results for innovative fishing gear.
