Job summary

UN Secretariat in New York seeks a data consultant for the DATAS initiative to strengthen Comoros' fisheries data systems. The role focuses on building a data catalogue, profiling data sources, and improving data collection and dissemination aligned with SDG standards.

The consultant will develop indicators for SDG 14.4.1 and fishing effort, coordinate with national stakeholders, and provide practical steps to institutionalize updated data practices for decision making.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in data analysis and/or data management.
• Experience with national statistical systems and environmental data is essential.
• Experience with data disaggregation by geography, sex, and population groups is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop a concept note detailing methodology, schedule, and data providers for the fisheries data catalogue.
• Assess data collection tools and methodologies for consistency and comparability, aligned with SDG/FAO standards.
• Identify stakeholders and document reporting challenges within the national statistical system.
• Inventory fisheries data sources and assess relevance, quality, and coverage.
• Profile data sources including format, structure, frequency, and quality.
• Recommend improvements for data collection mechanisms and platforms for completeness, timeliness, and disaggregation.
• Draft a fisheries data catalogue and profile report incorporating stakeholder feedback.
• Develop capacity for calculating SDG 14.4.1 and fishing effort indicators.
• Review data sharing and provide practical steps for national capacity building.
