The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Game Coordinator located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation seeks a dynamic individual interested in leading the department's Special Areas Program (state game refuges, wildlife sanctuaries, and critical habitat areas). The Statewide Program Coordinator is also integral to the Lands Program across southcentral and southwestern Alaska addressing development, planning and other actions potentially impacting wildlife resources, habitats, and public uses of those resources. This program includes the Wildlife Habitat Enhancement and Spatial Analysis Program with mechanical treatments and prescribed fire happening across the state. The Statewide Program Coordinator works cooperatively with other state and federal agencies, municipal governments, and nonprofit organizations engaged in wildlife conservation and the public's use and enjoyment of public lands. Responsibilities also include oversight of program budgets, supervision of professional and technical staff located in four area offices (Anchorage, Soldotna, Fairbanks, and Palmer), and represents the department in the statewide fire management group.

The working environment you can expect:
The position is based in the department’s Anchorage regional office with immediate access to diverse staff from all department divisions and disciplines. You will also interact with interagency colleagues, partner groups, and the public on a regular basis. There are many opportunities for conducting field work and site visits to the refuges, sanctuaries, and critical habitat areas in the southcentral and southwestern regions of the state. Travel within the state is required. Expect 3-4 multi-day trips to include field visits and interagency meetings. One-day trips are common for local refuge visits. Some field work involves camping, flying in small aircraft or helicopters, boat travel, and may require driving 4WD vehicles and snowmachines through difficult conditions.

Who we are looking for:

Knowledge and experience with Alaska’s wildlife and habitats and the laws pertaining to them.

Knowledge of Alaska’s ecological systems to include natural and anthropogenic influences on their function and sustainability; examples of common issues include infrastructure development (roads, oil and gas exploration), cultural or indigenous practices, geologic forces, and ecological disturbances (fire, hydrology, invasive species, pathologic or insect epidemics, etc.).

Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to create partnerships with diverse groups and collaborate on complex projects while building and maintaining effective relationships.

Proven ability to effectively manage land and water-based public uses and programs involving hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, and other outdoor recreational uses on public lands.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience writing and editing documents and giving public presentations.

Experience with the regulatory requirements for land use and land management actions including state and federal permitting, land use and land management planning documents; evaluating proposed land use or development projects to assess potential impacts to wildlife and proposing mitigating measures.

Experience working at the interagency level where missions may not directly align but common ground can be established or negotiated.

Experience with supervision, hiring, training, motivating, conflict resolution, and mentorship of employees

Experience conducting administrative functions including developing and managing budgets, report and grant writing, project management and tracking, and related functions.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
Seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist that includes at least one year as a program manager or technical expert or two years at an advanced professional level. The program manager or technical expert experience is met by service as a Fisheries Biologist 4, Wildlife Biologist 4, or Habitat Biologist 4 and the advanced professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fisheries Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, or Habitat Biologist 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

A master's degree in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management will substitute for one year of the required professional experience. There is no substitute for the requirement for specific experience as a program manager or technical expert or at an advanced professional level.

A doctorate in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management will substitute for three years of the required professional experience. There is no substitute for the requirement for specific experience as a program manager or technical expert or at an advanced professional level.

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills.
