Job summary

First State Squash in Wilmington, DE is seeking a Community Squash Manager to lead youth-focused programming and partnerships. The role collaborates with the Squash Director to plan after-school sessions, weekend calendars, and summer camps while expanding access to squash in the community.

The successful candidate will mentor youth, build relationships with families, and develop revenue-generating programs, at First State Squash.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is a plus, but not required.
  • Minimum of two years of squash coaching or high-level competitive playing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of squash rules, strategy and player development.
  • Experience in a community/club setting with group participation is a plus.
  • Experience working with diverse families and youth populations is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Coaching FSS youth programming: plan and administer daily after-school squash/fitness sessions.
  • Build weekend squash calendar with HS/MS matches, junior tournaments, and education matches.
  • Plan and run a 5-week intensive summer squash program.
  • Support in-school PE clinics and on-site field trips.
  • Build relationships with students and families through regular interaction.
  • Develop outreach programs to introduce squash to new audiences.
  • Provide and manage tournaments, clinics, private and group lessons, events and leagues.
  • Develop and manage memberships, bookings and billing processes.
  • Maintain membership records and analyze data to identify improvements.
  • Lead marketing of community programs.
  • Serve as primary contact for member inquiries and onboarding.
  • Ensure excellent customer service and maintenance of courts/equipment.

About First State Squash:

First State Squash is a not-for-profit youth development organization based in Wilmington, DE. First State Squash seeks to support Wilmington youth to achieve and sustain personal academic success, physical wellness and matriculation and graduation from post-secondary institutions. First State Squash’s year-round program offers longitudinal, tuition-free academic programming, squash instruction and cultural and community service opportunities for over 100 students annually, currently in fifth through twelfth grades.

The Opportunity:

The Community Squash Manager will:

  • work closely with FSS’s current Squash Director to ensure the successful development, planning, and administration of the organization’s athletic programming.
  • lead the implementation of FSS’s community squash programming to expand equitable access to squash.

The successful candidate will bring a passion for inspiring, mentoring, and guiding youth, as well as an enthusiasm for squash and coaching individuals of all ages and levels. FSS’s Community Squash Manager will be provided with the opportunity to play a meaningful role in an emerging youth development program, and the ability to build their own squash program.

Primary Tasks:

Coaching Responsibilities FSS youth programming:

  • Collaborate with FSS’s Squash Director
    • to plan and administer daily after-school middle and high school squash/fitness sessions.
    • to build FSS’s weekend squash calendar that includes: High School and Middle School team squash matches, US Squash Junior tournaments, and Squash + Education matches and tournaments.
    • plan and run a 5-week intensive summer squash program.
  • Support in-school PE clinics and on-site field trips with students from area schools.
  • Build strong relationships with students and their families, through constant interaction.

FSS community programming:

  • Develop outreach programs to introduce squash to new audiences.
  • Provide and manage tournaments, a weekly beginner clinic, other junior/adult clinics, private and group lessons, community events, and leagues.

Business Development

  • Develop and manage a business growth plan for memberships, tournaments, clinics, lessons, and events with distinct participation and revenue goals.
  • Maximize facility utilization and manage squash court bookings to accommodate youth programs, adult programs, and community events, while prioritizing First State Squash’s youth development program.
  • Manage ClubLocker reservations and assist with billing for FSS community memberships.
  • Maintain accurate membership records and databases.
  • Use software tools to collect, organize, and analyze data to identify areas of improvement.
  • Lead marketing of FSS community programs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for member communications, including inquiries related to lessons, clinics, memberships, and onboarding, and ensure timely resolution of member questions and concerns.
  • Refine membership materials, such as welcome packets, and promotional content, as appropriate.
  • Provide excellent customer service to current and prospective members.
  • Develop and manage maintenance procedures for squash courts and fitness equipment, ensuring regular maintenance and safe play.

Shared Program Staff Responsibilities include

  • Provide after-school transportation (twice a week) in our 10/12-passenger van for students to the facility, and for other special events and weekend trips.
  • Collaborate with all FSS staff for annual 5th/6th grade recruitment efforts.
  • Chaperone weekend field trips (matches, tournaments, college campus visits) as needed.
  • Participate in required certifications and trainings (i.e., CPR/First Aid, Safe Driving Tests, ).
  • Attend and help plan important First State Squash events and functions.
  • This role may also include additional responsibilities that emerge over time in response to the evolving needs of the organization.

Compensation, Benefits and Vacation:

Salary: Base salary, commensurate with experience, alongside attractive revenue-sharing opportunities including but not limited to private lessons, clinics, and camps.

Benefits: A generous benefits plan includes health & dental coverage and a 3% Simple IRA match.

Vacation: The position includes 5 weeks of paid vacation annually (with some restrictions) and 5 personal days. Some but not all national holidays are off.
