Job summary

Ideal candidates have 3–5 years in small device manufacturing, experience with Citizen/Star/Tsugami CNC Swiss equipment, and the ability to read blueprints and specifications.

Job Summary

The Swiss CNC Operator-II performs all tasks, roles and responsibilities of the Swiss CNC Operator-I in addition to Set up and operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines, including CNC Swiss style (sliding headstock) lathes, CNC lathes, CNC milling machines, etc. Set up simple to complex jobs to machine small diameter, close tolerance parts, including pointed parts. Following standard operating procedures and instructions. Set up and operate secondary equipment and perform any other functions within the department that may be necessary.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Reviews setup sheet & specs determining setup procedure, machining sequence, dimensions of finished workpiece.
  • Load control media to retrieve preprogrammed machine instructions from data base.
  • Work from procedures & prescribed sequences to achieve parts per print and quality specifications.
  • Attach fixtures and tooling to machine bed and position securely according to setup instructions, using clamps, bolts, hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments, such as ruler and caliper.
  • Ensure workpiece is being properly lubricated and cooled; coolant lines properly located.
  • Manipulate controls and enter commands to index cutting tool to specified set point
  • Monitor machine operation detecting malfunctions, such as worn/damaged cutting tools.
  • Troubleshoot problems, make minor adjustments to achieve quality output.
  • Adjustments to tooling, machines and/or part programs.
  • Engage supervisor or lead person if process/program require adjustments beyond minor adjustments.
  • Perform 1st piece & In-process inspections for self and peers as needed using appropriate measurement tools & methods.
  • Record measurements per inspection plans, methods indicated.
  • Monitoring for trends and adjusting as required to maintain specifications and minimizing variation. Maintaining specifications as defined on drawing and/or routing.
  • Communicate with co-workers, members of other shifts, technical leader, team leader and/or supervisor to transfer and receive instructions and information.
  • Assist with prove-outs and suggestions to improve processes as well as processes that are unproven.
  • Adjust machine feed and speed and change cutters to machine parts to specs. Suggest improvements to existing methods of CNC machining operation.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a small device manufacturing environment as a CNC Machining Operator/setup Operator is preferred.
  • Experience operating Citizen, Star, Tsugami CNC Swiss lathes desired or other CNC Turning Centers or CNC equipment.
  • Experience in medical device manufacturing, aerospace, machinery, and metals are desired.
  • Must be able to read blueprints, drawings, specifications and quality plans and have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Good manual dexterity and ability to use measurement and inspection tools.
  • Good work habits, strong workmanship and a positive attitude are required as well as an ability, desire and flexibility to perform a variety of machining operations and other functions within manufacturing as needed.

Education Requirements

H.S. Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a vocational school in manufacturing/machining or engineering discipline is a plus.
