Job Duties

• The VMI Police Department is seeking candidates for a full-time First Sergeant’s position. This position reports to the Captain of Patrol and Operations and requires the incumbent under administrative direction to, plan, direct, manage, supervise, and coordinates the activities and operations of an assigned service area within the Police Department; coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support as assigned.

Job Duties:

• Serving as shift supervisor for daylight shift to provide adequate staffing during daylight hours
• Serve as shift supervisor for daylight shift to provide adequate staffing during daylight hours; prepare and administer briefings; assign patrol beats; supervise and direct sworn staff and activities on assigned shift; conduct personnel, equipment, and building inspections.
• Perform all Sexual Assault and Bystander Prevention training to leadership in Corps
• Conduct all assigned investigations that require additional resources and extensive amounts of time
• Oversee Training and In-service for Department Personnel
• Review Policies and Procedures on a monthly basis and make any changes recommended by the Chief of Police
• Responsible for collection/storage of intel for monthly intel brief provided to Chief of Police
• Attend monthly staff meetings as well as Regional Crime Line
• Manage Evidence Processing Area and make sure with well stocked with supplies
• Manage the Evidence Room and make sure all evidence is stored properly
• Manage and coordinate Clery Training and assist with collecting Clery stats. Provide updates to annual Fire and Security Report
• Manage the Trespass Notice Program
• Participate in the selection and hiring of assigned personnel; train and evaluate assigned personnel; assist with training and orientation of new employees; provide training, guidance, and counseling to assigned personnel; complete employee performance evaluations and reviews as required; promote career development of subordinates.

Minimum Qualifications

• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Be required to undergo a background investigation as described in VMI Police Department General Order 1-22
• Have a high school education or have passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the Board of Education
• Possess a valid driver's license
• Pass a physical/medical examination, subsequent to a conditional offer of employment, conducted under the supervision of a licensed physician
• Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in the state of Virginia
• Minimum age of 21
• Not have produced a positive result on a pre-employment drug screening
• Shall not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to:
- Any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to petit larceny under §
18.2-96, or any offense involving moral turpitude that would be a misdemeanor if committed in the
Commonwealth
- Any misdemeanor sex offense in the Commonwealth, another state, or the United States, including but not limited to sexual battery under § 18.2-67.4 or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older under clause (ii) of § 18.2-371
- Domestic assault under § 18.2-57.2 or any offense that would be domestic assault under the laws of another state or the United States.

The incumbent must also successfully complete a course of instruction at a police academy approved by the
Virginia DCJS (unless currently certified as a Police Officer through DCJS in the Commonwealth of Virginia).
