Job summary

UHS in Texas is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to support surgeons by providing exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions during operations under RN supervision. You will help prepare the OR, drape, maintain sterile fields, and assist with closures.

This role requires competence in sponging, suctioning, positioning, and patient safety, with ongoing participation in mandatory education and drills. CSFA/CSA preferred; BLS required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge and proficiency in perioperative practices as Surgical Technologist for at least three years.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.
• Demonstrated knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative procedures wherein the Certified STFA assists.
• Demonstrated knowledge of surgical theory and clinical dexterity to perform identified skills.
• Knowledge to identify hazards and implement appropriate corrective and preventative actions for patient safety.
• Technical School/2 Years College / Associate’s Degree: Surgical Technology, or program board eligible for SFA certification
• Bachelor’s Degree in Science/related field, 3 -5 years related experience 5-8 preferred

Responsibilities

• Assists surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions during operations.
• Attends to direct patient care needs under RN supervision.
• Prepares OR, assists with draping and sterile field maintenance.
• Performs sponging and suctioning on operative sites.
• Performs closures under surgeon supervision.
• May harvest vein graft for cardiac procedures under supervision.
• Assists with securing drainage systems and applying wound dressings.
• Supports patient positioning and safety to reduce injury.
