Job summary

Jobtailor in Aurora, IL is seeking an entry-level firmware engineer to support development and debugging of embedded systems. You will learn and apply C/C++, work with microcontrollers, and engage with testing tools in a collaborative team.

You’ll participate in unit testing, follow coding standards, and contribute to smart home and energy-efficient product features while growing under guidance.

Qualifications

  • 0-2 years of professional experience in firmware, embedded software, or related engineering area.
  • Foundational knowledge of C/C++ programming concepts.
  • Object-Oriented Design development practices.
  • Ability to support debugging, testing, and documentation tasks within a defined scope.
  • Willingness to learn engineering tools, methods, and team processes.
  • BS degree student in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline (valued).
  • Knowledge of and experience with 8/16/32-bit microcontrollers (preferred).
  • Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in firmware or embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of bus protocols (RS-232, I2C, SPI, UART).
  • Experience with Python; Knowledge of Agile/Scrum; Experience with Jira/Confluence/Slack.
  • Familiarity with version control, issue tracking, or basic software testing tools.
  • This position is not eligible for US visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and modification of embedded systems firmware code for assigned product features or enhancements under close supervision.
  • Assist with debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving defined firmware issues using established tools and methods.
  • Perform bench-level testing using debuggers, protocol analyzers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power analyzers.
  • Participate in unit testing, code verification, and basic validation activities for firmware changes.
  • Work with engineers and cross-functional partners to gather information needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Follow development processes, coding standards, and configuration management procedures.
  • Report task status in project team meetings.
  • Complete assigned deliverables accurately and on time.
  • Contribute to firmware products that support smart home and building solutions, including connected, secure, and energy-efficient technologies.

  • Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in firmware or embedded systems
  • Knowledge of bus protocols such as RS-232, I2C, SPI, and UART
  • Experience utilizing Python
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum development process
  • Experience working with Jira, Confluence, and Slack
  • Familiarity with version control, issue tracking, or basic software testing tools
  • Basic understanding of hardware/software interaction in embedded products
