Job summary

Itron is seeking a Firmware Engineer to join a multinational team in Liberty Lake, WA or Waseca, MN. You will contribute across the development lifecycle for energy, water, and city solutions, from design to deployment over long product lifecycles.

In a hybrid environment, you will perform hands-on hardware debugging, develop firmware and unit tests in C/C++, and ensure regulatory compliance with FCC/UL standards while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• Experience with C/C++ and embedded programming.
• Familiarity with RTOS, assembly, RF and network protocols.
• Knowledge of regulatory standards and product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Develop firmware and associated unit tests in C/C++.
• Assist in design, documentation, development, debugging and maintenance.
• Identify and resolve defects in firmware using standard procedures.

As part of an international and multicultural Firmware organization and based in our Liberty Lake, Washington or Waseca, Minnesota site, you participate actively in the launch of new projects and in the customization of existing technologies.

As a Firmware Engineer, you are engaged with the local team in all phases of the development lifecycle for a wide range of solutions, from residential and light commercial & industrial products to communication systems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Operating in a rigorous development environment with regular, internal integration and external customer-facing system releases.
• Assisting in design, documentation, development, debugging, validation and maintenance of code.
• Implementing standards-compliant (ISO, IEEE, etc.) features within approved regulatory frameworks such as FCC and UL.
• Developing firmware and associated unit tests in C/C++.
• Identifying, analyzing, documenting and resolving defects, errors and inconsistencies in firmware using standard practices and procedures.
• Supporting products after they’ve been deployed to the field across their 20+-year lifetime: from initial programming to routine upgrades to low-battery end-of-life support.
• Hands-on debugging in the hardware lab.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• C/C++
• At least one scripting language such as Python, Ruby, PowerShell, Linux shell, C#
• Embedded programming, RTOS, assembly
• Computer architecture, RF, network protocol, layer models, communications between devices or tasks
• Version control

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location. Liberty Lake, WA: $60K - $115K annually
