Job summary

Itron, a leader in energy, water, and city solutions, seeks a Firmware Engineer to join a global team at Liberty Lake, WA or Waseca, MN. You will contribute across the full firmware lifecycle for diverse products, from residential to industrial systems, ensuring performance and compliance.

You will work on ISO/IEEE standards, FCC/UL frameworks, and deliver firmware with unit tests while providing ongoing field support over a 20+ year lifespan. A hybrid work schedule is supported.

Qualifications

• C/C++ firmware development
• Scripting languages (Python, Ruby, PowerShell, Linux shell, C#)
• Embedded programming with RTOS and assembly
• Knowledge of computer architecture, RF, and network protocols
• Version control proficiency and workflow

Responsibilities

• Operate in a rigorous development environment with regular integration and customer-facing releases.
• Assist in design, development, debugging, validation, and maintenance of firmware.
• Implement ISO/IEEE standards within FCC and UL frameworks.
• Develop firmware and unit tests in C/C++.
• Identify and resolve defects in firmware using standard procedures.
• Support products post-deployment over 20+ year lifetime.
• Hands-on debugging in the hardware lab.

As part of an international and multicultural Firmware organization and based in our Liberty Lake, Washington or Waseca, Minnesota site, you participate actively in the launch of new projects and in the customization of existing technologies.

As a Firmware Engineer, you are engaged with the local team in all phases of the development lifecycle for a wide range of solutions, from residential and light commercial & industrial products to communication systems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Operating in a rigorous development environment with regular, internal integration and external customer-facing system releases.
• Assisting in design, documentation, development, debugging, validation and maintenance of code.
• Implementing standards-compliant (ISO, IEEE, etc.) features within approved regulatory frameworks such as FCC and UL.
• Developing firmware and associated unit tests in C/C++.
• Identifying, analyzing, documenting and resolving defects, errors and inconsistencies in firmware using standard practices and procedures.
• Supporting products after they’ve been deployed to the field across their 20+-year lifetime: from initial programming to routine upgrades to low-battery end-of-life support.
• Hands-on debugging in the hardware lab.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location. Liberty Lake, WA: $60K - $115K annually
