Job summary

City of Strongsville Fire Department seeks a motivated Firefighter/Paramedic to deliver high‑level emergency response, EMS, and public safety education. The role includes fire suppression, medical response, and public outreach, with mandatory Ohio certifications and recent governmental experience.

The candidate will perform inspections, maintain equipment, and participate in training to uphold four pillars: Professionalism, Competence, Compassion, and Pride.

Qualifications

• Citizen of the United States.
• Must be twenty-one years old by certification date.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current valid Ohio driver’s license.
• Current Paramedic Certification from Ohio.
• Current Firefighter II Certification from Ohio.
• Must have recent experience as a firefighter/paramedic with a governmental entity (within 12 months).
• Minimum of 1,000 hours as firefighter/paramedic with a governmental entity.
• Cert from Cuyahoga Community College within 1 year confirming passing Firefighter’s Physical Agility Test (≤4:30).
• Additional items to submit: reason for leaving previous employer, type of agency employed by, other certifications.

Responsibilities

• Performs fire suppression, EMS, technical rescues, fire prevention and public education.
• Responds to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, and calls for service.
• Investigates potential fires, odors, and alarm systems.
• Participates in inspections, preplans, and building familiarization tours.
• Performs daily equipment checks and ALS equipment maintenance.
• Completes EMS reports, medication logs, and vehicle maintenance records.
• Tests and maintains equipment on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis.
• Replaces expended equipment and supplies.
• Maintains clean, orderly, and professional work environment.
• Performs any other duties assigned by supervisors.

Job description

The City of Strongsville is looking for highly motivated and dedicated individuals with previous experience for an opportunity to be a Firefighter/Paramedic. Strongsville Fire and Emergency Services is an all-hazards emergency response agency staffed, trained, equipped, and ready to respond to emergency calls due to fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical and trauma emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and technical rescue incidents. The Department performs many non-emergency functions such as: fire inspections and code enforcement, construction plan review, public education including fire safety, CPR and first aid training, and fire extinguisher training. • Performs fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescues, fire prevention, public education and public relations activities.
• Responds to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, and calls for service or assistance.
• Investigates calls of potential fires; odors; smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; medical and private alarms, and burning complaints.
• Participates in company inspections, preplans, and building familiarization tours.
• Performs daily equipment checks, inspection of advanced life support equipment and medications, and routine maintenance activities to ensure proper operation of firefighting, EMS, and other emergency equipment.
• Completes EMS reports, EMS medication logs, daily vehicle maintenance check sheets, advanced life support equipment calibration and operational checks, vehicle repair forms, and station activity log entries as required.
• Tests and maintains equipment as required on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis.
• Replaces expended equipment and supplies.
• Performs routine and seasonal maintenance and housekeeping activities to insure a clean, orderly, and professional work environment.
• Any other duties assigned by Fire Department company officers or administrative staff.

• Applicant must be a United States citizen.
• Applicant must be twenty-one years old on or prior to the date of certification to the lateral list.
• Applicant must have received a high school diploma or passed the General Education Development Test (GED) prior to the date of certification to the lateral list.
• Applicant must have a current valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
• Applicant must have a current valid Paramedic Certification from the State of Ohio.
• Applicant must have a current valid Firefighter II Certification from the State of Ohio.
• Applicant must have held a position as a firefighter and/or paramedic, with a governmental entity within the last twelve (12) months from the date of certification to the lateral list.
• Applicant must have a minimum of one thousand (1,000) hours of experience as a firefighter and/or paramedic with a governmental entity.
• Applicant must have a certificate from Cuyahoga Community College dated within one (1) year of the date of certification to the lateral list confirming that the Applicant has taken the Firefighter’s Physical Agility Test and has attained a passing time of four (4) minutes and thirty (30) seconds or less.
• Additional items that must be submitted to the Director of Human Resources:
  1. The reason the Applicant has been separated from the Applicant’s former employers or wishes to leave the Applicant’s current employment.
  2. The type of agency or entity that employed the Applicant in the past.
  3. Any other certifications obtained by the Applicant.
