Job summary

City of Somerton in Arizona seeks a Paramedic firefighter to provide Advanced Cardiac Life Support on all alarms involving sick or injured persons. You will respond to Medical, Rescue, Fire, and Special Duty alarms, stabilize incident areas, and administer care per established medical protocols.

Under general supervision, you will maintain equipment, participate in ongoing training, and ensure patient safety while coordinating with Base Hospital for patient status and treatment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Arizona Firefighter I & II certifications and paramedic certification required.
  • Must pass physical agility test and medical examination.
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety codes and medical protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Provides ALS/ACLS care per Base Hospital protocols.
  • Covers shift duties and maintains equipment on a 24-hour cycle.

Job description

This position is open until filled. The first review of applications will be September 17, 2026. If a sufficient number of qualified applications are not received by the initial review date, applications will be reviewed every eight (8) days thereafter until a sufficient pool of qualified applicants has been established. Subsequent review dates may be canceled if a qualified candidate is selected.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, provides Advanced Cardiac Life Support on all alarms involving sick, hurt or injured persons.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Reports for shift on time and prepared to immediately commence duties.
  • Responds to all Medical, Rescue, Fire and Special Duty alarms.
  • Responds to and stabilizes/secures incident area in hazardous materials incidents.
  • Designates and establishes safe treatment area for the assessment, treatment, and stabilization of patients according to medical protocol as outlined by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Base Hospital Director for Paramedics.
  • Is responsible for the proper assessment of all patients on all medical alarms.
  • Is responsible for the proper assessment of all patients on all Rescue alarms.
  • Is responsible for the proper treatment of all patients under their direct physical control on all Medical, Rescue and Special Duty alarms.
  • Follows both ADHS and Base Hospital Protocols in determining which Advanced Life Support treatment and skills are to be provided.
  • Performs those ALS or ACLS skills necessary for providing treatment.
  • Performs a communications patch with the Base Hospital to provide them with an accurate picture of the patient, their status and the treatment provided.
  • On multiple patient alarms, is responsible for the Triage of the patients.
  • Attends all necessary Base Hospital Tapes and Charts as required.
  • Attends all necessary refreshers as required to maintain certification.
  • Participates in ongoing training, skills demonstrations, and proficiency drills to maintain optimum proficiency.
  • Participates in training to maintain and upgrade current physical fitness.
  • Cleans, maintains, and inspects ABLE unit and equipment every shift.
  • Checks drug box daily and assures that all drugs are to date. As per Base Hospital direction goes to the Pharmacy and replaces drugs as they near their expiration.
  • Cleans, maintains, and performs duties related to the maintenance and repair of fire station facility and equipment.
  • Provides fire safety, prevention, health assessments, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid training in the public schools or to other community groups upon request.
  • Resolves routine problems encountered in performance of work assignments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Fills out 1st care form as directed by the base hospital.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess Arizona State Firefighter I & II certifications and Arizona Paramedic certification.
  • Must pass physical agility test and medical examination.
Knowledge of:
  • Federal, National, State and City fire and life safety laws, rules, regulations, codes, practices, and procedures.
  • Medical protocol related to emergency medical treatment practices, principles, and methods.
  • Computers and related equipment, hardware, and software for preparing reports and maintaining records.
  • Customer service methods and techniques.
Skill in:
  • Effective oral and written communications.
  • Responding to calls for service and providing emergency fire suppression, medical treatment, and rescue operations.
  • Assessing injury, providing medical treatment, stabilizing, and transporting patients according to established medical protocol at level of emergency medical certification.
  • Resolving customer complaints and concerns.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid Driver’s License and a good driving record are required.
  • Must possess Fire Fighter I and II, Arizona Paramedic or National Registry, Hazmat First Responder Operations, and CPR certifications,
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Work involves working rotating shifts and extended workdays outside the regular working hours.
  • Required to work weekends, holidays, and shifts consist of 24 hours.
  • May drive and operate emergency response vehicles and apparatus.
  • Work requires wearing of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) or Hazmat Suit for extended periods of time, climbing, lifting, carrying and/or transporting equipment and individuals weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Functional vision, ability to differentiate colors, hearing to differentiate sounds (voice, horn) is required to perform essential functions.
  • Work is performed in office and field environments.
  • Work may involve potential exposure to extreme weather conditions, extreme heat, unstable buildings and structures, hazardous chemicals and materials, emergency disaster situations, body fluids, infectious diseases and air and water borne pathogens when responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents.
  • Requires the safe use of a vehicle on City business.
