We are seeking candidates from a variety of backgrounds and experiences who are interested in serving a diverse and growing community.

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue is establishing an eligibility list for future firefighter paramedic openings, with a firefighter academy anticipated to start on February 1, 2027.

Essential Functions

The essential functions of the Firefighter position include, but are not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

Responds to alarms; performs all necessary duties as a firefighter, including, but not limited to, hose line operations, fire pump operation, operation of heavy equipment (including hydraulic rescue tools), functions with hand tools necessary in fire suppression including walking on pitched roofs and cutting holes in roofs and/or walls using power or hand tools, life safety activities, rescue operations including forcible entry, property conservation operations, clean‑up projects, and all other activities as required.

Paramedic Duties
  • Performs emergency medical services as consistent with EMT‑P rating and District policy. Responds as part of a team to medical alarms and other emergencies and performs appropriate emergency medical service. Responds to emergency scenes and maintains radios communication with the Dispatch office, local hospitals for medical consultation, and other response units.
  • Directs or provides advanced life support care on emergency scenes including triage, EKG interpretation, drug therapy, splinting, bandaging, immobilizing patient, extrication and all other related duties involved in on‑scene patient care.
  • Completes all reports by computer dealing with patient care as needed to record emergency responses.
  • Maintains required training hours as required by Oregon for paramedic certification.
Compensation

The monthly salary range within a step system for this position is $7,250.75 - $10,319.25 per month. Per the collective bargaining agreement, the starting pay will be $7,250.75 per month.

Candidates must have an unexpired passing score on the FireTEAM test administered by National Testing Network by the application close date and have a passing score on the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) taken since March 21, 2025. A CPAT certification will be accepted from any organization authorized and licensed by the IAFF and IAFC.

We will accept a passing CPAT until September 21, 2026.

We understand the cost of the CPAT can be a burden for some candidates. We partner with the National Testing Network (NTN) to provide a fee waiver program for those who cannot afford the CPAT testing fee. There are a limited number of waivers available for those who qualify.

Required for Initial Employment
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Paramedic license or National Registry certification as a Paramedic at time of application. Must possess State of Oregon Paramedic license by date of employment.

  • Must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for health and fitness.
  • In addition to a high school diploma, post‑high‑school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred and will be considered.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Must effectively perform essential job functions under stressful physical and mental conditions. Must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for health and fitness.

Working Conditions
  • Under stressful physical and mental conditions, while wearing personal protective ensembles and self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), perform all necessary duties as a firefighter.
  • Climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards.
  • Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm‑up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medications or hydration.
  • Reports/remains at work during major emergencies and/or disasters with little or no notice.
  • Work with a wide variety of hazardous materials as required. Exposure to various hazards, such as disease, chemicals, fumes, and other hazards as necessary. Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and non‑biological hazards, or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.

  • One‑way recorded interview – August 14 - September 18
  • Establish eligible list – September 22
  • Chief Interviews – Week of October 12
  • Academy start – February 1, 2027
Eligible List

September 22, 2026 – Establish eligibility list

  • Pass the FireTEAM test
    • Human Relations test score: pass point of 70% (one of two factors used to calculate exam score)
    • Mechanical test score: pass point of 60% (pass/fail)
    • Reading test score: pass point of 80% (pass/fail)
    • Math test score: pass point of 70% (pass/fail)
  • Pass the video‑recorded interview
    • To be considered passing, you must meet or exceed a minimum score of 50%.
  • Successfully complete the CPAT taken since March 21, 2025. A CPAT certification will be accepted from any organization authorized and licensed by the IAFF and IAFC. We will accept a passing CPAT until September 21, 2026.

Rank on the eligible list will be based on the following:

  • FireTEAM test – weight 25%
  • Video interview – weight 75%

February 1, 2027

We anticipate conducting a February 1, 2027 academy and will invite candidates from the eligible list to an onsite interview, in accordance with Civil Service rules.
