Responsibilities

  • Communicate with supervising physician or hospital to relay patient history and condition.
  • Administer medications via intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraosseous, or sublingual routes.
  • Perform advanced emergency medical procedures and participate in ongoing training (including TECC and FACT*R).
  • Respond to emergency calls, engage in firefighting, rescue operations, and EMS duties as part of a team.
  • Drive emergency apparatus and operate fire pumps, hydraulic systems, ladders, and related equipment.
  • Assist in public safety education, community risk reduction, and outreach activities.
  • Maintain equipment and perform related duties under supervision as required.

Job Announcement

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) is seeking qualified individuals for a paramedic/firefighter role. A $10,000 sign-on bonus is available for fully qualified new county employees.

About the Department

FCFRD provides basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) EMS, fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. The department operates across 39 stations with diverse urban, suburban, and rural coverage and employs approximately 2,000 personnel (uniformed, professional, and volunteer). Personnel work rotating 24-hour shifts. The department maintains several advanced apparatus and units and supports an international urban search and rescue team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Illustrative Duties by Functional Area
  • Fire Suppression – respond to alarms, deploy hose lines, enter buildings, ventilate, perform salvaging, operate pumps, search for victims, and provide first aid.
  • Advanced Life Support – serve as ALS provider on assigned units, perform advanced assessment and treatments, administer medications, and complete ePCR documentation.
  • In Each Functional Area – attend training, participate in drills, perform station duties, and maintain records.
Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: high school graduation or GED.

Licenses and Certificates Required:

  • Valid driver’s license at time of application and during employment in uniformed service.
  • Certificate as Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT-P and/or National Registry Paramedic at time of application.

Following successful recruit training, additional certifications are required or recommended, including Hazardous Materials Operations, EVOC, CPR, and full ALS certification, as well as ICS 100 and ICS 700.

Necessary Special Requirements
  • Maintain a fitness level sufficient for fire suppression and rescue activities, as demonstrated by Fitness and Assessment Program requirements (unless on approved light duty).
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check, polygraph, and physical ability test prior to appointment.
  • Must be 18 years old at application; tobacco-free at appointment with a no-tobacco agreement.
  • Maintain appropriate medical ratings as required; accommodations considered case-by-case.
Physical Requirements
  • Reach above shoulder and perform bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and other physical activities.
  • Work with arms overhead, stand, sit, push, and stoop; all duties performed with or without accommodation.
