Job summary

The City of Stuart is seeking a Firefighter-EMT to respond to emergencies, operate firefighting and rescue equipment, and provide medical care as part of engine and rescue crews. The role emphasizes safety, training, and public education within a dynamic fire department environment.

This position requires Florida Firefighter and EMT certifications, a valid Florida Driver's License with EVOC, CPAT readiness, and ongoing maintenance of BLS CPR.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; Florida Firefighter and EMT certifications, and BLS CPR.
• Must possess and maintain a Florida Class E Driver's License and EVOC certification.
• This position is mission critical and requires reporting during civil emergencies.
• CPAT may be required during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergencies with a fire company or rescue unit; drives fire apparatus or rescue vehicles to and from emergencies.
• Responds to fires and other emergencies; operates pumps, aerial ladders, ground ladders, and mechanical accessories.
• Answers medical emergencies as part of an engine company, as a basic or advanced life support unit or on a rescue unit as an advanced life support/transport unit.
• Removes, extracts, and rescues persons from danger.
• Recognizes acute symptoms requiring immediate care; administers life-saving rescue procedures.
• May be assigned to a rescue or engine crew.
• Prepares required paperwork and reports.
• Connects hose to hydrants and pumps; joins hose sections and connects nozzles to hose; enters burning buildings with or without hose lines, extinguishes fires.
• Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment; raises and climbs ladders; ventilates burning buildings to remove smoke and gases.
• Makes daily inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects; cleans and maintains station and replenishes supplies.
• Aids in mitigation of other emergencies as directed by supervisor.
• Attends training sessions in emergency medical care, firefighting methods, equipment operation, rescue procedures, hazmat mitigation; may conduct training and drills.
• Recognizes hazardous material situations; identifies unknown substances and aids decontamination setup.
• Provides educational information and lectures to community organizations and schools on fire safety and the profession.
• May supervise probationary firefighters.
