Position Description

The FY26 Proposed Budget includes an increase to the pay range: $69,000 - $129,588 (Bill 47-25)

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK: Provide emergency medical services to the highest level of certification; operate advanced life support or basic life support medical units and rescue equipment; participate in drills and training; perform fire prevention inspections, public education safety presentations, and fire suppression activities. Visit Fire Department's website for recruitment info. This full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive position may require shift work.

Critical Dates
  • Application deadline: Tuesday, June 24, 2025
  • Written Exam & Oral Assessment: July 12 or 13, 2025
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test & Background Review: Late August 2025
  • Academy Start: January/February 2026 and June/July 2026

Candidates must attend the written exam and oral assessment on the scheduled dates. Exact times will be emailed. The exam includes written and video-based oral components, conducted back-to-back, estimated total time 3.5 hours.

Preparation materials: Orientation Guide. No electronic devices allowed during testing. Bring a valid ID.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED; certification and license as a Paramedic by Maryland EMS Board; valid Class B Motor Vehicle License; at least 18 years old by start date.
  • Must obtain Maryland Paramedic license within 6 months of hire.

OR

  • High school diploma, completion of Anne Arundel Fire Training Academy, 1 year Firefighter II experience, Paramedic certification, valid Class B license.

This is an entry-level position; no prior fire service experience required. Position is safety-sensitive and subject to drug testing.

  • Medical Examination & Drug Test

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications and pass all steps. Preference given to volunteers and veterans as per policies.
