JOB DESCRIPTIONPosition Summary:Provides fire suppression, performs rescues, removes or stabilizes hazards, provides emergency medical service including basic and/or advanced life support, transports patients, and promotes and demonstrates fire safety programs.
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.- Suppresses fires to preserve lives and property.
- Provides pre-hospital care at the basic and/or advanced life support level.
- Maintains advanced life support, equipment, supplies and drugs as
- required.
- Upon completion of step-up process, be able to drive and operate the fire
- engine as assigned.
- Performs maintenance and minor repair work on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains all equipment in a functional condition.
- Maintains the station which includes housekeeping and repairs.
- Conducts tours, talks, demonstrations and classes to educate the public
- on fire safety.
- Participates in continuing training classes.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education:High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:Six months to one year of experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:Must be Certified Texas Firefighter/EMT by hire date; certified Texas Firefighter/Paramedic preferred. Possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy; must obtain Class “B” within six months of hire; current Texas Certified Structural Firefighter and Texas EMT required; Texas Paramedic preferred.
Conditions of Employment:Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test. Must pass a background investigation. Must be able to pass post-offer physical, psychological, and polygraph exams. Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy and have the ability to obtain a Class “B” within six months of hire.
Other Requirements:Ability to distinguish between red, yellow, and green in order to identify traffic lights and sign colors. Must have visual acuity needed to discern traffic signs and house numbers from approximately 50 feet and often in dim light. This position is subject to emergency operations. The individual holding this position will be required to work as usual or as needed: 1) during emergency operations, 2) in preparation for prolonged emergency operations and/ or 3) during recovery from prolonged emergency operations as directed by his/her direct supervisor, Department Head or designee, or the City Manager or designee.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESKnowledge of:Fire prevention, suppression, and rescue techniques; department rules and regulations; building types, construction and street locations within the City; pre-hospital advanced life support techniques; use of firefighting equipment and techniques.
Skilled in:Remaining calm and decisive under extreme stress; distinguishing between red, yellow, and green in order to identify traffic lights and sign colors; using firefighting equipment and techniques; using a two-way radio and other communication devices; using a personal computer including Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar word processing programs, e-mail, and the internet; accepting responsibility for his/her actions; performing work accurately and thoroughly; following instructions, safety practices, and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks; communicating effectively, clearly, and concisely both orally and in writing; being punctual and attending work regularly; and working effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily within the fire station and in close proximity to subordinates. Incumbents must be physically able to perform strenuous and hazardous tasks under emergency conditions and must have the stamina and the mobility to work a minimum of a 24-hour shift and to respond to major fire alarms and emergency situations. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate the above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees working in the fire department are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, uncontrolled temperatures, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset citizens in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Employees partially work in outdoor environments. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects more than 100 pounds.
Work is performed in a variety of environmental conditions, both indoors and out, with exposure to wide temperature variations, noise, vibrations, fumes, smoke, grease, machinery and its moving parts, odors, dust and irritating or hazardous materials and chemicals. Protective clothing helmets, gloves, boots, etc., are required while responding to emergency calls. Physical demands require running, bending, stooping, climbing, and frequently lifting heavy objects. Incumbent must be able to pass the medical examination required of fire personnel. Incumbents must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction and communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood. Incumbent will be required to respond to emergencies after regular working hours and on weekends and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which will include weekends, holidays, evenings and/or varying hours.
