Job summary

Santa Fe County Fire Department is seeking a Fire Engineer to perform advanced firefighting duties, operate pumpers and aerial devices, and respond to emergencies as an EMT-Basic. The role requires driving and maintaining equipment, performing pump tests, and coordinating with crews.

Job description

Primary Purpose

The Fire Engineer performs a variety of advanced level fire-fighting duties, including fire engine pump operations. Must be able to safely drive and operate all types of fire apparatus. Performs as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician responding to emergencies as required.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists firefighter in firefighting and/or medical emergency activities; guides and/or directs personnel on firefighting rescue operations and/or medical response operations in the absence of a higher-ranking firefighter.
  • Maintains living quarters and facilities.
  • Inspects and maintains all Fire Department pumpers and aerials; performs all pump tests including annual service and acceptance; performs minor repairs on pump and apparatus; reports major mechanical problems.
  • Drives, spots, and operates emergency apparatus and other related equipment; performs vehicle placement to achieve effective delivery of suppression materials (water/chemicals, etc.); operates pumps to control various nozzle pressures and flows; assures proper procedures are followed to engage, prime and discharge supply lines.
  • Operates aerial ladder at fire scenes as needed to rescue and remove victims or direct aerial ladder streams; calculates hydraulic formulas as required.
  • Uses valves and hand tools to make hose connections; adjusts discharge to proper pressure rating as determined by hydraulic calculations; monitors pumper cooling systems, pressure relief systems, and discharge pressures; makes adjustments as needed.
  • Inspects, tests, cleans, and performs minor maintenance on firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical service equipment and tools.
  • Participates in ongoing formal on-the-job training programs; may assist supervisory personnel in training firefighters.
  • May prepare a variety of reports.
Knowledge/ Skills
  • Knowledge of the geographical area of Santa Fe County; fire department policies and procedures; emergency response procedures; fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; emergency medical response procedures and treatment methods; fire and life safety codes and enforcement requirements; fire training and curriculum development and delivery is highly desired.
  • Ability to think and act quickly; act independently; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; use a variety of medical equipment, fire suppression and special protective gear under stressful emergency conditions; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. Previous supervisory or management experience is desired.
  • Ability to work with fire/EMS data entry programs is desired.
  • Knowledge of firefighting tactics and strategy and emergency medical techniques.
  • Knowledge of fire vehicle pumping operations and safe emergency vehicle operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be an EMT-Basic licensed by the State of New Mexico.
  • IFSAC Firefighter II or equivalent; completion of training provided by the department in Emergency vehicles, Operations, Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator, Incident Command, and Pump Operations or equivalent as determined by the Fire Chief.
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Minimum three (3) years of continuous service with Santa Fe County Fire Department in a paid firefighting position.
  • IFSAC Driver/Operator Certification; and IFSAC Pump Operations and Hydraulics Certification.
  • Must have completed the SFCFD Engineer Task Book.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions

Work is performed both indoors and outside, in varied weather conditions. Work schedule may vary and includes shift work and assignments up to 24 hours or longer in duration. Call back and mandatory overtime may be required in emergency situations. Travel is required. Arduous physical exertion is required in unusual situations. Must be able to drag 175 lbs. for 75 feet and lift up to 50 lbs. Manual and finger dexterity required. May be subject to exposure to heat, smoke, cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, broken bones, insect and/or animal bites, germs, bacteria, viruses, environmental allergens, gases, fumes, contagious diseases, mental anguish under emergency conditions. May be subject to life threatening situations.

Conditions Of Employment

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class E Driver’s License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties.
