**WRITTEN TEST AND PHYSICAL AGILITY WILL BE ADMINISTERED**

Firefighter EMT- Basic - Classified Status Employee ($18.54/hour- $55,441.06/year)

Firefighter EMT- Intermediate- Classified Status Employee ($19.65/hour-$58,741.06/year)

Firefighter EMT- Paramedic- Classified Status Employee ($21.05/hour-$62,941.06/year)

Firefighter EMT Paramedic applicants: **$8,000.00 Hiring Incentive. The first $4,000 will be paid upon hire, and the second $4,000.00 will be paid no more than 30 days prior to completing the one-year probationary period.
Candidates hired without a New Mexico EMT-Paramedic license, but qualify for reciprocity, will receive the first $4,000.00 on the first full paycheck after receiving and submitting their NM EMT-Paramedic license to their supervisor and HR. They will receive the second $4,000.00 no more than 30 days prior to their successful completion of their one-year probationary period**

**An Individual whose qualifications exceed the minimum qualifications for the job may be hired above the minimum of the range based on full years of related work experience as presented on the application**

Job Description
PURPOSE SUMMARY.

Perform firefighting and respond to medical and emergency situations where life, property or the environment is at risk.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES.

This is a safety-sensitive position.

  1. Respond to fire alarms and perform fire suppression duties.
    • Lay and connect hose, hold nozzles, and direct fog, chemical or water streams; raise and climb ladders; use portable fire extinguishers.
    • Make forcible entry into buildings when necessary and ventilate burning buildings; evacuate persons from danger; and perform salvage operations.
    • Participate in fire drills and attend training classes.
    • Maintain an awareness of the location of fire hydrants, water system layouts, streets and buildings.
    • Respond to and mitigate hazardous material releases.
    • Operate radio or telephone equipment to establish and maintain contact with dispatch, Medical Control physicians, or other fire personnel.
  2. Respond to emergency calls to render emergency medical care to patients.
    • Perform initial and ongoing focused patient assessment and physical examination.
    • Determine priority of patient care based on assessment finds; take, record and monitor patient baseline vital signs which include temperature, blood pressure and pulse; manage respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bag-valve mask resuscitation, or automatic external defibrillation (AED); control external bleeding with direct pressure; splint and immobilize fractures and dislocations for transport.
    • Remove or assist in removing victims from accident or emergency scenes. Drive or ride in medical units to emergency medical call locations as instructed by dispatcher or supervisor and relay patients to medical treatment facility.
    • Attempt to ascertain patients' pre-existing medical problems; employ a variety of established emergency medical techniques, methods and equipment to stabilize patients for transport; and prepare appropriate and relevant patient care documentation.
  3. Perform general maintenance and upkeep of Fire Department property and supplies.
    • Make minor repairs to property and equipment.
    • Wash, hang and dry hoses.
    • Maintain, test, and operate firefighting equipment and apparatus, as assigned.
    • Maintain supply inventory for assigned unit, conduct preventative maintenance and safety checks of vehicle and emergency equipment.
    • Perform station or vehicle cleaning or maintenance duties as necessary, to include general cleanup, mopping, sweeping, and yard work.
    • Maintain and make minor repairs to firefighting and medical equipment.
    • Maintain records of repairs and equipment assignments.
    • Complete forms and maintain accurate records, run and vehicle maintenance logs, fire hydrant inspection and test records.
  4. Participate in technical rescues, including high angle, water, trench, confined space, and combined search and rescue.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES.

Other duties as assigned. Position may require mandated overtime based on the operational needs of the department.

  • Attend specialized and periodic training to enhance skills and maintain certifications.
  • Conduct tours of station houses for civic and other interested groups.
  • Assist in crowd control and protect valuables.
QUALIFICATIONS.

A. Education. High School diploma or equivalent .

B. Experience. Volunteer or paid firefighter experience is preferred but not required. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County policy.

C. Licenses/Certifications. Required at time of application:

  • Valid driver's license. Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy.

Must obtain the following within six months of hire:

  • Completion of Dona Ana County Fire Academy
  • ICS 100 , 200, 700 , 800
  • Fire Certifications
    • IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter I and II
    • IFSAC or ProBoard Hazardous Materials A/O.
    • IFSAC or ProBoard Emergency Vehicle Driver
    • IFSAC or ProBoard Vehicle Extrication
  • New Mexico Class E or Texas Class B driver's license
  • Basic Wildland Firefighter S130/190 L180
  • Minimum of New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician-Basic license

Preferred:

  • NM EMT-Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic or equivalent National Registry.

Equivalent certifications may be accepted upon review by the Fire Chief or designee.

Must maintain certifications and licensures for continued employment.

E. Other. (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Must undergo and pass an annual physical abilities test (PAT); pre-employment background and driving record check; credibility/deception assessment, medical/drug screening; and annual medical physical according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 standards.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid, federal Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam certificate. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state rules and regulations regarding alcohol and/or drug testing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of :

  • Practices, procedures and equipment used in fire suppression.
  • Communication and interpersonal methods and techniques to deal with the general public and County staff, which must be conducted with courtesy and respect at all times

Skill in :

  • Analyze emergency situations and select effective course of action, giving regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Interpreting information accurately and make decisions according to existing laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Communicate effectively; speak clearly and distinctly with the public and employees.

Ability to :

  • Cope with stressful situations.
  • Learn and perform firefighting, rescue and emergency care practices, techniques, and methods and to apply such information to specific situations.
  • Make minor equipment repairs and adjustments under supervision.
  • Drive emergency response apparatus and equipment to which assigned.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships.
