Position Purpose
Protects life and property by performing fire suppression, basic life support (BLS) medical and trauma treatment, hazardous materials and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Under general supervision of a Company Officer, provides basic life support services to ill or injured persons in accordance with the policies established by the Venus Fire Department and the Medical Control Director.
Essential Functions
- Performs fire suppression activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose and performing fire attack, containment and extinguishment tasks.
- Performs first responder activities including administering basic life support (BLS) medical care.
- Participates in fire drills, attends classes in fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous material and related subjects.
- Receives and responds to fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
- Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs.
- Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities.
- Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment to include care for the grounds around the fire station.
- Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting hazardous materials and first responder activities.
- Performs rescues such as water, vehicle, trench, high angle, elevator, body recovery, confined space or any other rescue as needed.
- Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
- Responds to medical emergencies; performs primary and secondary physical assessment of ill or injured persons.
- Treat patients in accordance with Johnson County ESD 1 Protocols and Fire Department policy.
- Respond to and perform skilled tasks at the scenes of emergency calls and non-emergency calls.
- Compile necessary reports and records.
- Participate in Fire Prevention activities.
- Operates a variety of apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, and vehicles including lifting, hoisting emergency medical equipment and other EMS related equipment.
- Conducts daily inspections of condition and readiness of equipment; clean, wash, and service equipment, inspect, test, and maintain equipment, emergency lighting equipment, generators, rescue and first aid and related equipment; flow-test hydrants.
- Responds to miscellaneous emergencies, including rescues, flooding, and natural disasters, respond to non-emergency situations including elderly assists, vehicle and residential lockouts, and other non-emergency situations.
- Participates in physical training activities; aerobic and/or weightlifting routines.
- Assists in securing sites by directing traffic, clearing public, clearing landing zones for helicopter landing, setting up lighting and related activities.
- Assists in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned.
- Assists in training new employees as assigned.
- Attends classes that are required to maintain certifications.
- Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work at heights greater than ten feet frequently.
Move objects 40-60 pounds short distances (30 feet or more) frequently.
Hold 80-100 lbs. frequently and carry 50-150 lbs. infrequently.
Lift or drag in excess of 150 lbs. of force occasionally.
Perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 40 pounds or more, such as removing hose from apparatus, pulling ceilings, starting power equipment, and opening doors on apparatus, as required.
Bend, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, twist, and perform repetitive motions repeatedly or continually over time to perform emergency medical services, fire ground, or other response-related duties.
Lift arms above shoulder level to cut vent holes with an axe or force entry into vehicles using specialized tools.
Travel across wet, slippery, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
Use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases.
Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing job duties.
Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements.
Within accepted safety practices, rely on sense of sight, hearing, touch, and smell to help determine the nature of an emergency and make operational decisions.
Make life and death decisions during emergency situations.

Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must have High School diploma or GED.
- Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City’s auto liability carrier
- Possess a valid Texas Class B exempt driver’s license or obtain within 6 months.
Required Certifications
- Must be fully certified with the TCFP as a Basic Structural Firefighter.
- Minimum EMS Certification with the Texas DSHS as an EMT-Basic.
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 within 6 months of employment.
Preferred Certifications
- TCFP Driver/Operator – Pumper
