Brookhaven National Laboratory is hiring a Firefighter/EMT to join the Fire Rescue Group. The role involves fire suppression, EMS, hazmat, and rescue duties with duties including equipment operation, training, and community safety education.
Initial training is 8am–4:30pm, Monday–Friday; after probation (12–15 weeks) shifts transition to a 24 hours on / 48 hours off cycle. Must hold NY EMT-B and Firefighter I certs, plus valid NYS Driver’s license.
Organizational Overview The Brookhaven National Laboratory Fire Rescue Group is part of the Laboratory Protection Division within the Facilities & Operations Directorate. This group was formed in 1947 from the former Army Base staff, the BNL Fire Rescue Group is a full time, career Department. The mission of the Fire Rescue Group is to provide Brookhaven National Laboratory with fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, confined space rescue, technical rescue, salvage, and damage control. BNL Fire Rescue Group provides emergency medical services to employees, guests and visitors.
Position Description BNL Fire Rescue is seeking a Firefighter/EMT to join their team. This individual will take the proper action to ensure the safety and protection of people, equipment and property. The individual must be skilled in firematic procedures, the use of emergency equipment and the application of emergency medical assistance. May be required to perform such duties off site. Performs assigned duties in fire protection work, reports and tests. Maintains, services and operates a variety of tools and equipment connected with fire prevention, fire, rescue, and emergency medical assistance. May be assigned special and routine training assignments and drills. Such assignments when pertaining to medical assistance will not exceed the standards of the New York State Emergency Medical Technician. This person will report to a Fire Captain. The initial training shift will be from Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm. After successful completion of the probationary period (approximately 12 to 15 weeks), the candidate will transition to a 24 hours on /48 hours off rotating shift schedule.
The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date. The Lab’s placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The starting rate for this position is $48.19 per hour during the probationary period.
