Qualifications

  • Must successfully complete required medical examinations, physical fitness assessments, and substance testing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire, rescue, medical, hazardous materials, aircraft-related, and other emergency incidents.
  • Perform firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and incident stabilization activities in accordance with department policies and established emergency response practices.
  • Deliver ALS care, patient assessment, treatment, stabilization, and related medical interventions within scope of certification and medical direction.
  • Participate in search and rescue operations, victim recovery, extrication activities, and emergency scene management.
  • Support emergency response activities involving aircraft operations, launch operations, hazardous environments, and specialty response functions.
  • Assist with incident size-up, hazard recognition, risk assessment, and implementation of appropriate response strategies.
  • Operate safely and effectively under emergency conditions and changing incident environments.
  • Deploy and operate firefighting equipment, hose lines, nozzles, extinguishers, ladders, ventilation equipment, and related tools.
  • Perform vehicle and machinery extrication utilizing hydraulic rescue tools and specialized equipment.
  • Participate in technical rescue operations involving confined spaces, rope rescue, trench rescue, structural collapse incidents, and related disciplines.
  • Operate in hazardous environments requiring respiratory protection and chemical protective gear.
  • Assist in hazardous materials response activities.
  • Complete reports, inspection forms, inventories, equipment checklists, and other required documentation accurately.
  • Support fire prevention activities, safety initiatives, facility assessments, and operational planning.
  • Maintain effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, customers, and external agencies.
  • Safely operate department vehicles and other authorized government vehicles as required.
  • Support launch operations, flight hardware protection activities, and other specialized mission support functions as assigned.

Job description

Summary

The Firefighter/ALS is responsible for providing emergency response, firefighting, rescue, and Advanced Life Support (ALS) services in support of personnel, visitors, facilities, and mission-critical operations at Wallops Flight Facility. As a member of the emergency response team, this position responds to fires, medical emergencies, aircraft incidents, hazardous materials events, technical rescues, and other emergencies requiring immediate intervention and skilled response.

The Firefighter/ALS delivers emergency medical care within the scope of certification and training while actively participating in firefighting, rescue, and incident stabilization operations. This position supports the protection of life, property, and operational assets through rapid response, professional judgment, technical competency, and adherence to established emergency response standards and procedures.

  • Operate in hazardous environments requiring respiratory protection, chemical protective clothing, fall protection systems, and specialized rescue equipment.
  • Assist in hazardous materials response activities consistent with training and certification requirements.
  • Complete reports, inspection forms, inventories, equipment checklists, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Support fire prevention activities, safety initiatives, facility assessments, and operational planning efforts as assigned.
  • Maintain effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, customers, and external agencies.
  • Safely operate department vehicles and other authorized government vehicles as required.
  • Support launch operations, flight hardware protection activities, and other specialized mission support functions as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in firefighting, emergency medical services, industrial fire protection, military emergency response, airport firefighting, or a related public safety field preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of firefighting principles, fire behavior, emergency response operations, and firefighter safety practices.
  • Knowledge of Advanced Life Support procedures, patient assessment, emergency medical care, and patient stabilization techniques.
  • Knowledge of ARFF operations, hazardous materials response, technical rescue disciplines, and incident management principles.
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and make sound decisions in rapidly evolving environments.
  • Ability to safely operate firefighting tools, emergency medical equipment, communications equipment, and specialized emergency response systems.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining professionalism and accountability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, coworkers, supervisors, contractors, visitors, and allied response agencies.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports, maintain records, and complete required documentation.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, electronic reporting platforms, and standard business software applications.
  • Skill in operating personal computers, communications equipment, and standard office equipment
