Position

Full-time Firefighter I – AEMT (City of Sandy Springs Fire Department)

Location: Sandy Springs, GA, US

Salary: $60,907.70 Annually

Shift schedule: 48/96-hour shifts.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all city fire codes, ordinances and state fire laws and regulations to protect life and property; comply with all orders and instructions from superior officers.
• Respond with assigned fire company to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents; evaluate scenes upon arrival; may direct traffic and control crowds.
• Provide control of fire situations including suppression, extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue of victims, salvage and overhaul; recognize and preserve evidence of arson or other crimes.
• Select and operate fire service tools and equipment, including hoses, nozzles, ropes, appliances, and components of sprinkler and standpipe systems; strategically position fire apparatus; monitor controls and gauges.
• Locate water source; lay and connect hoses; operate as nozzle or backup in water streams; raise and climb ladders; use chemical fire extinguishers.
• Identify dangerous building conditions, electrical emergencies, hazardous materials and ancillary health hazards; mitigate hazards; inform or evacuate individuals and implement medical protocols.
• Provide emergency medical care as an EMT‑I/A, including basic first aid, vital sign checks, CPR, spinal immobilization, IV fluids, maintenance, triage, defibrillation, airway management; assist patients with medications per local protocols; follow infectious control procedures.
• Assess treatment effects; provide rehydration and first aid support during fire‑ground activities; transport injured persons as necessary; relay complete medical information to hospital personnel.
• Perform various rescue operations as assigned: extrication from structures, trenches, underground entrapment, machinery, or vehicles; high‑angle rescue with rappelling; animal rescue.
• Assist with emergencies involving public transportation (rail, passenger bus, aircraft); perform rescue, fire extinguishment, medical assistance, and fuel containment.
• Assist with emergencies involving multi‑story/high‑rise buildings; perform rescue, extinguishment, medical assistance, and operate fire‑control systems.
• Implement emergency techniques when trapped or disoriented; assist fellow firefighters; guide new recruits; maintain protective clothing and self‑contained breathing apparatus as designed.
• Communicate effectively over radio channels with dispatchers, medical professionals, and department employees.
• Prepare, decontaminate, inspect, inventory, repair, and maintain fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, turnout gear, first aid supplies, and vehicles; test equipment regularly; dispose of bio‑hazard waste; fill air cylinders; perform post‑fire clean‑up.
• Prepare pre‑fire plans including building layout and hydrant locations; check hydrants for proper function.
• Establish and maintain good working relations with the public; attend community meetings; promote and teach fire safety and prevention; answer questions and requests; investigate complaints; execute disaster pre‑plans.
• Maintain current field and code manuals, policies, procedures, employee handbooks, maps, addresses, and related materials for reference.
• Attend shift meetings, seminars, drills, and training sessions to maintain knowledge of departmental and city operations; improve job performance; stay current with medical and rescue techniques and equipment.
• Complete and prepare various forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and documents associated with daily responsibilities; maintain administrative records and files.
• Cooperate with federal, state, and local law‑enforcement agencies and representatives during investigations within city jurisdiction.

Additional Functions

• Position is safety‑sensitive, subject to random drug and alcohol testing and other testing methods per City of Sandy Springs policies.
• Must possess and maintain Georgia Fire Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) qualifications.
• Firefighter certification AND National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Firefighter 1 certification.
• Must possess and maintain Georgia and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate, Advanced, or Paramedic license.
• Must possess a High School Diploma or GED Certification.
• Must possess a valid US Driver’s License; must possess a GA Driver’s License at time of employment.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Have not been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years.
• Must successfully complete all hiring steps: physical fitness assessment, extensive background investigation, post‑offer polygraph examination, psychological and medical evaluations, and drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proof of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Proof of National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Hazardous Materials Operations.
