Job description

Job Summary

The City of Sandy Springs Fire Department is hiring a certified Firefighter/AEMT for full‑time positions on a 48/96‑hour shift. The department operates five stations with 8 companies, including aerials, a tower ladder, a heavy squad, and four engines, staffed by full‑time firefighter/AEMTS and firefighter paramedics.

Key Responsibilities

• Adhere to all city fire codes, ordinances, and state fire laws, and comply with all instructions from superiors.
• Respond with assigned fire company to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents; evaluate scenes; direct traffic and control crowds.
• Provide control of fire situations, including suppression, extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue, salvage, and overhaul; recognize and preserve evidence of arson or crime.
• Select and properly operate fire service tools and equipment, strategically position apparatus, and monitor controls and gauges.
• Locate water sources; lay and connect hoses; act as a nozzle or backup person; raise and climb ladders; use chemical fire extinguishers.
• Identify dangerous building conditions, electrical emergencies, hazardous materials, and ancillary health hazards; mitigate incidents and implement appropriate precautions, evacuation, and medical protocols.
• Provide emergency medical care as an EMT‑I/A, including first aid, vitals, CPR, spinal immobilization, IV maintenance, triage, defibrillation, and other required treatments.
• Assess treatment outcomes, offer rehydration and first aid, and provide emergency medical transport as necessary; relay complete medical information to hospital personnel.
• Perform rescue operations: extrication, underground entrapment, machinery, vehicle, high‑angle rescues, and animal rescue as assigned.
• Assist with emergencies involving public transportation (rail, bus, aircraft) and multi‑story/high‑rise buildings, including rescue, fire extinguishment, medical assistance, and fuel containment.
• Maintain and wear protective clothing and self‑contained breathing apparatus.
• Communicate effectively over radio channels; exchange information with dispatchers, medical professionals, and other department employees.
• Prepare, decontaminate, inspect, inventory, repair, and maintain fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, turnout gear, first‑aid equipment, and vehicles; perform routine equipment tests and post‑fire cleanup.
• Prepare pre‑fire plans, check hydrant functionality, and ensure fire‑control systems are operational.
• Engage the public, attend community meetings, teach fire safety and prevention, and execute disaster pre‑plans.
• Maintain current field and code manuals, policy and procedures, employee handbooks, maps, and related materials.
• Attend shift meetings, seminars, drills, and training sessions to stay current with departmental operations and medical and rescue techniques.
• Complete and prepare administrative forms, logs, requests, reports, and other documentation.
• Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies during investigations related to city jurisdiction.

Salary & Overtime

Base salary: $60,907.70 annually.
Annual COLA and performance bonus (where eligible).
Annual bonus for participation in specialty teams (TEMS, TRT Squad, Bike Medics, Honor Guard, Fire and EMS Instructors, Arson Investigators).
243 hours of overtime built into the yearly work schedule.

Minimum Requirements

• Possess and maintain Georgia Fire Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) certification.
• Firefighter certification and National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Firefighter 1 certification.
• Possess and maintain a valid Georgia and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (Intermediate, Advanced, or Paramedic) license.
• High School Diploma or GED certification.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license and Georgia driver’s license at the time of employment.
• Minimum age of 18 years.
• No felony convictions within the past 10 years.
• Successfully complete all hiring steps: physical fitness assessment, comprehensive background investigation, post‑offer polygraph examination, psychological and medical evaluations, and drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proof of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
• Proof of National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Hazardous Materials Operations.
