Job summary

Princeton Fire Department is seeking a Firefighter to support the department’s mission with safe, professional service. You will ensure apparatus and equipment readiness and respond to emergencies with respect for the community we serve.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or equivalent, Basic TCFP certification, DSHS EMT-B or higher, Texas driver’s license, background check, and fitness testing. Expect a 48-hour on/96-hour off shift, ongoing training, record keeping, and collaboration

Job description

Under general direction from the Shift Officer, responsible for effective teamwork within the organization in support of the Fire Department’s mission, goals, and programs. As a Firefighter, assures the operational readiness of the Princeton Fire Department related to apparatus/equipment and emergency response capability. In the performance of duties, acts in a safe, professional, and competent manner with accountability. has the responsibility for enforcement and compliance with city policy. Participates in the activities of their assigned shift and treats the citizens with respect and professionalism.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide citizens’ and firefighters’ health, welfare, and safety under their responsibility and supervision.
  • Assure appropriate actions are taken daily and at emergencies to address firefighters and occupant safety.
  • Perform with competency in the role of Firefighter in the performance of normal and emergency duties.
  • Plan and carry out prevention/public education activities to serve the needs of the community.
  • Inspect apparatus and equipment on assigned shifts to ensure department, city, and state compliance.
  • Train and interact with department personnel to increase our overall effectiveness and competency.
  • Maintain proficiency/certifications related to the department’s fire and emergency medical mission.
  • Embrace health and fitness by a first responder’s duties and department SOGs.
  • Engage in the daily operations of an assigned shift to assure proficiency and overall success.
  • Work cohesively with public officials, employees, and citizens in meeting community needs.
  • Respectful to the city and department’s missions and organizational values.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Maintain a shift work schedule of 48 hours on duty and 96 hours off duty beginning at 7 am and ending at 7 am.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods related to firefighting, EMS, and fire prevention.
  • Maintain an awareness of local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and codes as applied to the fire service.
  • Apply the Fire Department’s Standard Operating Guidelines and City of Princeton’s Personnel Policies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in safe mitigation of emergency incidents, and general life safety concerns.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, superiors, local officials, agencies, and other city departments in the support of the cities and department’s mission and objectives.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people and provide a respectful and safe environment.
  • Work in an outdoor environment subject to extremes of temperature, inclement weather, and some exposure to dust, fumes, contaminated atmospheres, loud noise, and physical hazards.
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of modern firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  • Operate office equipment including, but not limited to telephone, fax, computer, and printer.
  • Maintain physical fitness as specified by Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proficiency related to working in full PPE for extended periods.
  • Maintain a professional example and practice good hygiene and grooming standards.
  • Demonstrate effective decision-making, incorporating reason and system thinking.
  • Lift 100 pounds to the waist and drag 150 pounds for 50 feet to simulate a rescue.
  • Complete annual fitness testing and annual physician’s evaluations.
  • Perform life support, when necessary, at emergency medical incidents.
  • Prepare/maintain records, reports, and perform data entry.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in written form.
  • Maintain composure in highly stressful situations.

High School Diploma or equivalent. Basic TCFP certification. DSHS EMT-B or higher Certification (Paramedics will be given higher consideration). NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800. Must have a working cell phone. Have and maintain a professional, inviting, and friendly demeanor. Texas Class C Driver’s License or greater, reliable transportation, and ability to drive; maintain and provide proof of liability insurance. The military must produce a DD 214. Ability to pass a background check, fit for duty examination, drug screening, and pass psychological examination. Annual Work Sample and SCBA Function Test.
